Okay, we've tried several times and lost several hours of playing. We're playing "Guitar Hero World Tour" on PS3. We do the Career thing and play a bunch of songs. We go back to the menu and exit/shutdown. We come back the next day -- and all our song playing is lost! Grr.

The "gig" is the entire song list - look on it as a concert from the musicians' perspective or a game level for the gamers. Until it's completed you don't progress in your career. Gigs consist of a series of "sets" of 4 or 5 songs, there is a total about 80 songs in the game to complete your careers.
If you get to complete the encore song after the boss song you have finished the gig successfully. That's about song 6 in each stage.
The problem was two-fold, but stemming from one problem. We weren't saving manually because we thought auto-save was on -- it wasn't. The auto-save had an X in it that looked like it was enabled, but clicking it put a checkmark there. Bad user-interface design in that case. So, we just finished the band career. Yahoo!

According to Red Octane the only way for the game to save your progress through a gig is to either complete it entirely, or for you to pause the game and exit out of the gig otherwise your progress is deleted.
