Question

How to strengthen my Actiontec M1424wr router (Verizon Fios) single for wireless online play for my ps3

Asked by: CAD05

I am about 25 to 30 feet away from my router while playing online with my ps3. Every time I turn on my ps3 it takes a while to log into the Playstation Network, and when its on I check my network single and the single strength is 55% to 65% it sometimes go to 70% and I once saw it go up to 80%. So I was wondering if there is a way to setup to router to be able to get the full potential of my wireless router for the ps3. So I was just wondering if there is something I could be before I go buy a better antenna, and which antenna would you recommend for this router. Thanks

The real question is do you have a problem with lag in your online gameplay. The router and the PS3 use the 802.11g 54Mbps protocol, meaning it runs on the 2.4 GHz freq. This band is also used by many household electronics and there are countless things that could be causing the interference.
So what really matters is the network speed you are getting. 54Mbps is faster than any DL bandwidth Verizon offers so you are capped to a certain DL speed anyway. So again I say, if you are have major lag problems you might be concerned, but if you are only worried about having 70-80% connection there is nothing to be concerned with.

Yes lately I have been having lag in my online gameplay. My network speed is 20mp/5mp, and the single strength has been 55%-65% is that normal?

I have the same setup (Verizon FiOS at 20/5, PS3, and so forth).  My PS3 is wired, but I have a Wii in the same room as my LinkSys router with the open-source DD-WRT firmware.  Even with the Wii in the same room, it rarely goes over 75% strength.

Wireless has multiple issues going on.  Not only to you have signal strength, you also have to worry about interference, encryption, maintaining the connection, and a number of other factors that are not a concern with a wired connection.  That said, even with 55-65% strength, you shouldn't be having too much of a lag problem.   My nephew also has the same config with his PC connected wirelessly two rooms away and he doesn't have an issue with latency.

But it's also very possible that wireless has nothing to do with it.  Keep in mind that with on-line gaming most connections are only as good as the slowest connection.  So, if someone else in the game has poor latency it can have a severe performance impact on everyone who is playing.  This is why a lot of servers will automatically disconnect people with consistently poor latency.  Your gaming latency might very well not be on your side at all.

Is it possible at all for you to run a cable just to determine if you get a better connection than wireless?
