Question

My PS3 No Longer See's My Media Server

Asked by: matrix0511

For about the past 6 months now I have not been able to get my PS3 to recognize my media server. I cant seem to figure out what caused it to stop. But prior to that time, it had been working great! I would turn on my PC, turn on my PS3 and the PS3 would see my media server. I only use the Windows Media Player on my laptop to use the media server setting. I have under tools - Options - Library - Configure Sharing and everything is still setup the same way.

and I confirmed I can access internet, Playstation store and my wireless settings are setup on the same network as my laptop. Please  help! Also, see attached screen print. shows my settings in Windows Media Player.

Hi
when you bbot your pc ahve you tried launching media player then turning on the ps3?  As media player is the media server normally on boot it will boot as a service and run in the background so you can share media, maybe this has stopped running on boot?
Also do you have to add the files you want to share in media player? Are they all in there still?

Have you changed any settings for your network at all?

If worst comes to the worst (my mate has issues with this on his xbox, especially with windows 7) you can delete all traces of the media server from ps3 and all sharing details from media player then start afresh and set it backup again, takes longer and is a bit of a ball ache but should solve the problem straight away.

In your PS3 menu have you checked in network settings, media server connection, make sure this is enabled otherwise you will get no media server.  Check it and see.

Hi QEMS2, I do have Windows Media Player running on my laptop, but are you speaking of a specific WMP "service"?? I wasn't aware of this. If i run my "services" app from Control panel should I see a service running for WMP??

I usually always have WMP open on my laptop before trying to search for it via PS3.

I have also confirmed that media server is "enabled" in PS3. I'll keep troubleshooting. thanks

QEMS2, you said: "you can delete all traces of the media server from ps3", how do I do that on PS3??

Go to:Control panel > administrative tools > services
In here there should be all your services that run on the os.  if you scroll down to Windows media section (you may see ones about media center if you have vista or media center xp installed) otherwise look at:
Windows media player network and sharing
On the status you want automatic really so if it is on manual just right click go to properties and then there is a drop down box to change this to automatic, when done click apply.

This will just start the media player sharing option on windows bootup, so you dont always have to have media player open to share your items as the service is running it will do it for you.

Regarding deleting the media server from the ps3
Disable media sharing on the PS3, disable the media sharing in media player (if you can, delete the device from media player sharing so you have to re add it later), re-enable media sharing on the PS3, and finally re-enable the media player and start again to add the ps3 as a new device.

This is worst case scenario tho as i think it must just be a setting somewhere that is stopping the connection to the media server so I would only do this as a last resort.

Try my second post for making sure that media sharing is enabled on the ps3 if you havnt already.

Just found a good ps3 media server forum site if any good:

sorry to jump in so late. Couple other suggestions or things to look at:
Have you always been connected via a wireless router, or have you recently changed (within past 6 months)
Are you using any firewall or antivirus software on your PC. Try to disable Windows Firewall while you test your connection. If you are using McAfee or Norton AV or Security Suite, disable this for a short time as well. Say 5 minutes, all you should need to test.

Also with the screen shot I noticed you were sharing it as your name (not a problem), just makes me want to ask, do you have other users on your laptop? I had a similar problem with my computer where I was sharing with WMP as my username and also as Administrator and they were conflicting.

Have you also upgraded to the latest firmware for your PS3?

Hi Jstncase, thanks for the suggestions. I have always been connected via wireless router. For years and no problems in the past.

I dont have my windows firewall turn on so that is not a problem. I use AVG antivirus. But i can still disable it temp.

I actually just changed my share name in WMP just in case I had another share name out there that was the same, but it didn't help the issue.

and yes, I am uptodate with my PS3 updates.

The more I think about this, I think it could be that I need to shut down ALL my network devices, router, cable modem, all pc's laptops, PS3, xbox, etc. Then power on cable modem, router, laptops then PS3 and see what happens.

I remember having issues with WMP on connecting.

From memory (it was nearly a year ago I used WMP) I had to have my wireless card running along side my physicaly network card in the PC streaming the media.  I may have had to flick it between wired/wireless before the PS3 picked it up.  There was also up to a 30min delay on detecting the Media Server.

I done a little blog for streaming, although it doesn't cover WMP it may help, if you register on the forum there is a document with screen prints too:
