Question

How to transfer data from XBox 360 to PC

Asked by: HbugProject

I'm able to view pics and listen to music on my 360 from data that is stored on my PC but how can I reverse this? I want to take demos and trailers that I've downloaded via XBox Live and store them on my PC to save hard disk space.
I cannot find any articles on the web about how to do this.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

http://www.engadget.com/2006/04/11/datel-xsata-connects-xbox-360-to-pc-via-usb/

I have seen it for sale at Best Buy, EB Games, Gamestop and Walmart. Should be easily available at many other locations, or from www.buy.com, www.amazon.com and other retailers.

by the way,
i think this breaks the XBOX live policy.  as i recall, all of the content you download from xbox live as a disclaimer at the end of the description that says it's non transferable...  you might want to verify before you put money toward your cause...

in fact, i don't even think it's legal to WATCH your content on anything other than the 360...let alone copy it over...

this isn't straight from the horse's mouth (microsoft), but it does confirm my suspision:
http://techdigs.net/content/view/113/42/
"Digital Rights Management

As expected these days, there's no shortage of Digital Rights Management (DRM) in the Xbox Live movie/TV service. In general, it didn't encumber use on the Xbox 360. However, the fact that it's not possible to store movies on network drives or other computers (even if playback is limited to the Xbox that downloaded the video) is a severely limiting factor especially when the Xbox 360 has only a 20GB hard drive. "

oh.. .and after reading the details on the link posted by jstncase, it appears that the cable allows you to "back up" your content. .. but most of the content is digitally locked so you can't view it.

i don't think you're going to find such a product (legally) on the market...

by: zephyr_hexPosted on 2007-11-08 at 16:44:53ID: 20246911

just to clarify... i'm not saying that the backup of the data is illegal...  if you just want to free up space and have no intention of wanting to do something with that data on your pc...  the illegal part would be a device that would allow you to watch or view that backed up content on something other than your console

if you just want to back up the data and not use it, then that cable will do the trick.

Thanks guys for all of the help! This gets me going in the right direction. I know this process is going to be very difficult to achieve even for us people who want to play by the rules. I just want to free up space on my 360. If I can only use my 360 to use that specific data, that's fine. I'm just running out of space!
Thanks again guys!

Just to let you know, with the cable you can copy, move, delete, files back and forth from your PC and the XBOX 360. Alot of the media yes you can view on your PC. Yes everything is digitally signed that has to do with downloadable content, but regular music, most videos aren't.

And if you search hard enough on OTHER *cough* www.360gamesaves.com forums *COUGH* sites, not here, you will find your answers to viewing all digital content, and adding your own.

FYI - if you think that it is illegal to transfer data from your XBOX 360 HDD, then explain why when you purchase a new HDD (120g) in size it comes with a transfer cable for those users with a 20GB HDD. Also MS Tech support will assist people in transfering their data from smaller to larger HDDs when their systems are being swapped/replaced.

I am not aware if the cable is packaged in all new HDDs, but when I bought a new HDD and also when I picked up an Elite Xbox 360, the cable was in both with instructions on how to transfer my data.

Also DRM will be slightly modified for the XBox since they are allowing download and recording of Live TV shows and movies (DVR functionality), in competing with the PS3 offering the same services 2nd quarter next year.

hmmm.
i tried to be clear  about what i was saying but i guess i wasn't

i just wanted to be sure that the person asking the question wasn't assuming that he could transfer the data AND view all of it on a pc.  i am pretty sure the movie and tv show downloads have a disclaimer in the description.  in fact... the movies aren't even purchase price... they are rental price.  it would be like saying it was legal to "backup" a rental from blockbuster...

i looked up the disclaimer on the movies:
Movies are available for rental only. According to the Xbox Live terms of service, rentals expire 14 days after purchase or 24 hours after hitting "play" for the first time. It's a limited, nontransferable, noncommercial license and you cannot transfer the media to another device like your PC or a portable media player.

transferring  content to a larger 360 hdd is different in that you're also going to recover your gamertag to that hdd.    the content is still tied to your gamertag, and still only playable on a 360 console.  i don't think you can say that because you can transfer the content from one 360 hdd to another, you can therefore transfer the content to a totally different device.

i think the rules for tv shows may be different from movies since you are actually purchasing the content and not just "renting".  i'm not sure exactly what the rules are for tv shows....
but again, my point was just to make sure the poster didn't assume he could transfer all his content AND watch it without issues (legal or otherwise) on his pc.

i don't know if you can transfer videos and such from your 360 to PC...but on the IGN review it clearly says that.....

"Sadly, what you can't do is transfer pictures, music, or movies to the 360's HDD. While it would be nice to dump a chunk of your mp3 collection into the 360, the 360 won't take it. To get media like that into the 360, you'll have to stream it via Windows Media Connect or use a USB HDD to get the 360 to accept the media."

So...if you can't do that, I'm pretty sure you can transfer from the 360 to pc, because that would make no sense that you can transfer one way but not the other.

I'm pretty sure its only saved game files you can backup.

Tyler - If you checked the link for the device, you absolutely can. I have DiVX movies on my 360 i have copied from my PC as well as a whole hard drive full of my MP3s. The device lets you backup everythign from your 360 to a PC and vice versa.

by: tyler-desjardinsPosted on 2008-07-07 at 14:28:46ID: 21948839

i'll take your word for it...but the link doesn't say anything about videos or music.

identical product, old link (sorry): http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EEVkllZkAVmpfFOIrH.php

This is the one I own and purchased from Best Buy: http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EEuuuFyAuZHOtlmCtg.php

The device comes with a little application or sort of browser. It allows you to view files on your Hard drive as well as the Xbox 360. Anything that is on your computer can be copied over to the Xbox 360, and vice versa. The app is a little sluggish but does work. I've added gamertag pics and music/video. Also backed up my complete HDD to the PC in case it ever crashed, or something became corrupted.
