Question

Need Help solving XBox FTP networking issue

Asked by: ShadowZ

Hi, I need help is solving an issue while trying to ftp files from computer to xbox 1 console. I have setup my PC and xbox 1 console as follows:

PC:
IP address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: empty
DNS: empty

Xbox:
IP address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: empty

FTP program used: Filezilla, Flashxp

My xbox has a 1TB hdd which is modded by a seller with XBMC as its main interface, and it has other apps like evox, avalaunch and unleashx as bootable interfaces. My current issue when ftping is whenever say I transfer a file from the pc to the xbox, while transferring halfway, the ftp program cancels the file transfer or it also freezes up, and when I take a look on the xbox inteface (anyone of them), the screen just either freeze or go blank. However say if I instead transfer a file from the xbox to the pc (any file size),it would not crash. It is only when files from pc of any size were to crash after a while. I get an error message using the default ftp way(using windows explorer to browse the ftp website) which is "Make sure you have permission to put files on the server. Details: The connection with the server was reset". Btw, when I check my xbox hdd status in the evox interface, it says it is locked. Just wondering if this has anything to do with issues transferring.

Could someone advised on what is the best solution I can do to transfer files besides using the default ftp solution which I am thinking to take out the xbox hdd and just slot it in a external hdd caddy to link up to windows to transfer file. I have not attempted this yet as would like to seek advice on this before proceeding and how to go about this. If this is not an option, please recommend an solution if possible to fix the issue I have with the ftping files from pc to xbox only.

Thanks in advance.

There's a kind of tutorial here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/213943
I'd go for a direct connection rather than router but in any event make sure you have your firewall off and check if the xbox is expecting login credentials (account "xbox" pw "xbox")

I already read this from the forum( http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/213943) before and it is not working as well. I have disable the firewall, antivirus, etc. I change the ethernet connection to full duplex but does not help. While transferring files from xbox to pc, not much problem encountered as most files went through and even though if it failed on some files, it did not freeze up my xbox. However when transferring files from xbox to pc, it happens to freeze when transferring halfway and I could not do anything else except to reboot the xbox.

Just a qs regarding the setup of large xbox hdd on the xbox, is it a problem if let say I have a 1 tb hdd using ide/sata controller might have issues with power failure when transferring halfway. Also, because a seller who sold me the xboxwhich I bought  has setup the xbox with 3 main partitions which is the C drive(300+ mb) for main xbox boot dash files, E drive(4gb approx) for xbmc and F drive for storage (900gb); will it cause a  problem with read/write issues while ftping, etc as I believe I read somewhere in forums that for large hdd, they need to be partition using 32kb clusters with one partition a maximum of 137gb on the E or F drive and the rest can be on G drive or something like that otherwise it might cause issues with glitches, etc. Could someone confirm if thisstatement is true or not and may contribute to some of the issues I had with the networking side of it or is it just only a basic ftp networking issue and nothing that serious.

Please help. Thanks again.

The file system for the XBOX was never designed to handle file partitions of that size. Basically because at the time of XBOX 1, there were not any consumer TB drives available. Usually in a case like this you would split your F drive into a F and G drive. Also another reason for splitting the drives is for performance issues.

Also what method are you trying to transfer files? Active or Passive? and are you doing FXP or direct file transfer? These issues do matter with the performance of the XBOX and transferring files. Lastly just for humor sake, set your Default Gateway on your PC.

My Setup with my XBOX 1's are I transfer everything from my XBOX to my 2TB NAS drive. I used to do direct to the PC, but it just became easier this way. Only time I connect PC <-> XBOX is when I update my version of XBMC. Plus I have everything going through a switch and using DHCP for simpler routing.

Hi, I used active for file transferring from pc to xbox but I tried using passive mode as well (done using the setting configuration in either flashxp or filezilla)but no difference in solving the issue. On the note which you mention direct file transfer is it taking out the hdd and putting it in a pc or using windows explorer file browser to navigate to the folder for transferring files (ftp)?

I did try to set the default gateway for the pc as well before but it does not work, I only know that the d.gateway is important to be set correctly on the xbox which should reflect the d.gateway to the pc ip address for ftp transfers.

I don't have the facilities of a switch and I have a router but my router and my xbox to link with my pc is very far apart. Therefore I use wireless connection but for the ftp transfer in this case, I have to use the crossover cable for transferring files from pc to xbox.

In regards to your statement that you mention for performance reason, you would setup it to g drive as well so I guess this may explain a partial reason why the xbox may fail in receiving transferred files.

Btw, if the xbox is already formatted to have F drive to use up 900 gb and there is some data already allocated there, is it still possible to create a G drive and swap the files across to the partition. Let me know if there is a program to do so without losing any data on the F drive while doing so and I will try the ftp again if not working.

Lastly, is it possible say if I takeout the hdd from the xbox and stick it in a caddy and just transfer the files across from computer to xbox drive thereby eliminating the need for me to use ftp. Can this be done or I need a software to do this?

Thanks in advance.

It is not possible to connect the Xbox drive directly to your computer becouse the filesystem of the xbox is different. I used to have a modded Xbox.
I have exchanged my hdd as wel. +-300 gb drive. I remember i had to split the drive in smaller parts to make it work. If you want to try and repartition your xbox it is advisable to do so with a guide and backup the data on the current partitions. I can remember some details where a bit tricky to do (like the partitioning).

Thanks for the advice, looks like ftp is the only way then :(

Let me know if you can assist with partitioning like for 1 gb, what's your advice on splitting the drive to multiple drive letter and what file size/clusters,etc cause I may need to repartition the drive again from scratch if further test done still not working

Thanks

You should be able to find drive partitioning FAQs and Tools on the website http://www.xbox-scene.com. Some of the tools can be ran directly from your computer or a disc can be created and loaded on the XBOX itself.

Check under FAQS, Tutorials, Tools and Software. There will be software available as well as how-to guides on this manner.

Thanks guys for all your help so far, will try out the forums and stuff. So far, I changed the sata/ide converter on the xbox hdd and it is now working on the ftp; only some files are the ones causing problems while doing ftp transferring but other than that, all good. Thanks
