Hi mehta29,

It so appears you are using a router which will therefore mask your ip. Pc's with routers used for creating servers will not be listed as online servers. Your ip address is therefore incorrect and users will not be able to join.

Netherless, you can try the steps which I mention to you to see if it works.

Get yourself connect to internet first, then

If you are using windows 98, Click on Start, choose "run" and type:

winipcfg

and press enter.

1.) Check and see what's your ip address here. (Under Ip Address)
2.) It should be in this format XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX (An exampe: 192.168.0.1 The number will be difference as this ip is assigned by your ISP (Internet Service Provider))
3.) Once you get your ip, create a cs game online and ask your friend to join your server using this command:
4.) Eg your ip is 192.168.0.1
5.) Your friend should type at the cs console /connect 192.168.0.1:27015

If you are using windows 2000 or windows xp, Click on start, choose "run" and type:

cmd

and press enter,

1.) From here, type

ipconfig

and your ip will be displayed in IP address.

3.) Once you get your ip, create a cs game online and ask your friend to join your server using this command:
4.) Eg your ip is 192.168.0.1
5.) Your friend should type at the cs console /connect 192.168.0.1:27015

It would be better if you were to provide the Operating system you are using for creating a server.

Are u using Windows 98 or Windows Xp?

by: mehta29Posted on 2003-06-17 at 16:10:37ID: 8745005

I am using windows Xp...and I have gone to my routers setup...and it shows my external ip is different than the one that i see when
i run cmd...the type ipconfig..and all of that....

In this case, you have to use the DNS ip to have your friend try connecting to it. In this case, your router is getting the ip address and you have to check what ip was assigned to your router in order for you to go online. It's a DNS ip.

With that, when you create an online cs game by creating a server, use that ip assigned to your router and give it to your friend. Ask them to try connecting to the ip address.

For users creating their own server, it'll end with a 27015 eg: 192.168.0.1:27015

So, you'll type

/connect 192.168.0.1:27015

Hi mehta29,

Sorry for the late reply.

I've figured out what went wrong. My system which I'm having is this, I have 2 system at home and 1 is the so-call server having the modem connected to my system and sharing my broadband connection. In this way, I can do so cos my IP is given by ISP when I dialup.

But in your case, a DNS ip is given to your modem and then your router uses it to route the internet to both of your system at home. Your IP's are unique in this case which is assigned to your network card connected to your system. It's either 192.168.0.2 or it's something else which you might have keyed it in yourself. In this case, creating a cs server using a router to route the internet is not possible as when u create the game, cs will use the IP allocated to your network card which is 192.168.0.2 and this is not a valid ip known to cs server. In order to create an online game, your machine needs to have a valid DNS ip and not a network card ip. I'm afraid u can only connect to other people's game whereas you cannot create your own cs game server.

I would presume your router is configured as : 192.168.0.1

Therefore, your ip might be something like:

IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

My ip looks like this without the router:

IP Address: 203.125.73.76
Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 203.125.73.76

I hope this answers your question.

:-)

It is usualy possible to do it but more info is required like the model of your router and the current firmware version. ddns is sometimes the way to go.

OMG, this conversation has gone way off course! First of all your DNS server IP has nothing to do with CS and never will. I'm not going to bother explaining what the DNS server is, but it isn't for CS.

This is what you need to do to your router.
 1) Forward ports : 7002 using TCP
                               5273 using TCP
                               27010 using UDP
                               27012 using UDP
                               27015 using UDP
2) Once this is done you need to create a file in your cstrike folder called autoexec.cfg. In this file set max players, your IP, and your starting map. (make certain the map CVAR is last in the list)

Now assuming everything else on your server has been configured it should work without a problem.

Now for your IP complications. You have a WAN IP and up to 255 LAN IPs. The WAN IP is what people outside of your network will use to connect to your server, so when someone says hey I want to play on your server, thats the IP you give them. You can find this IP by going to www.whatismyip.com  OK, now for those internal IPs, these are what anyone inside your network will use to connect to your server. To find what your IP is on your server, if you are using XP do as mehta29 said, go to Start, then Run. Type cmd and hit enter. Then type ipconfig. Your server IP will be the second line down. This IP is what you use in your autoexec.cfg file.

If you don't have any idea what your autoexec.cfg file is or how to make it, then I shall explain. It is a configuration file that is run every time you start your server, and sets up the basic server parameters. Now this is how you make it :

1) Go to notepad, this is under Start, Programs, Accessories, then Notepad.
2) Once in notepad copy the following paragraph into notepad.

maxplayers 10
ip xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
map de_dust

This is the order the commands should be in, the map command HAS TO BE LAST. Note that your maxplayers can be altered to suit your needs. And the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx will be the internal server IP you found earlier. And lastly the map can be the map of your choice.

Please let me know how this goes, my e-mail is (edited by Computer101) or you can always post something here. Good luck!

Correction on the post,  Programming_Gal is the individual who told you to use cmd and ipconfig, sorry.

by: CK_KnightPosted on 2003-07-16 at 01:43:11ID: 8932317

alright i know........you should open ports for your friends to come in.........and add them to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:port opened in router.  i have a belkin also and you should add -port "portopened"  without the quotes to your CS shortcut. or gametiger.   you can open ports by adding them to CS.  but hey........i have a belkin.....go in virtual server.......and click the tab with the list of games and stuff..........half life should be in there and click apply after you click it and be sure to add the last two digits of your ip to them.........i play CS also. hehe

by: emenon1Posted on 2003-07-17 at 10:32:50ID: 8944723

the -port "portopened" CVAR need only be applied when you are using a port OTHER than 27015. Such as if you were making a server on the same computer you were playing on, then you need to add that CVAR to your shortcut or your autoexec.cfg file.

by: emenon1Posted on 2003-12-30 at 01:17:45ID: 10015137

a few things.
you're sure u have the correct IP? if not,
-WINDOWS XP-
go to start/run then type cmd. type ipconfig in the command line and that will give you your IP.
-WINDOWS 98/ME-
go to start/run then type command. type ipconfig in the command line and that will give you your IP.
-WINDOWS 2000-
i can't remember so try both. :)
second, what isn't working with the server?
and third, if you are trying to connect to the same computer in which u are playing, then you also need to open port 27016 using UDP. once you do this when you go to run your server you need to tell it to use port 27016 and not 27015 (that part is really easy).
good luck

ok i got the server to work but how do i make it work so that 2 computers can both have working listen servers. i know i have the right ips and and stuff because i have the first server working.  And ive tried to make the same port open for 2 ips but it doesnt lemme...so can anyone help???

by: mehta29Posted on 2004-01-16 at 15:08:38ID: 10133819

anybody??

by: emenon1Posted on 2004-01-16 at 19:44:02ID: 10134745

you disappoint me my friend.
think about it, the reason the first server wouldn't work is bc u needed to change the port bc CS needs 2 different ports. so all you need to do is change this other server to 27017 since 27015 and 27016 are taken. also make sure you forward the ports in your router to this new server IP. however i'm not sure how your router will handle forwarding the same stuff to two IPs, it may lag your servers but thats something you'll notice once they are both running. other than that you should be ok. remember when giving out these server addresses include the port at the end. for example don't just give 192.168.1.1 give 192.168.1.1:27016 or 192.168.1.1:27017 otherwise if u give only the IP, the default port is 27015 and thats no good for you. good luck

by: mehta29Posted on 2004-01-17 at 09:24:29ID: 10136766

exactly...i cant forward the same ports to both ips and and ive already tried to forward port 27016 and 27017 to my ip but someone said i have to put soemthing in the command line...???
