Do they have a fixed IP?
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI play Halo PC and I have a dedicated server for Halo PC. I'm looking for some sort of server-side application (it would have to be since you want it to apply for all those that join the server) that can figure out if the connection in question is using a legit software key.
Some background information:
This server I run belongs to a Halo Clan. One of the ex-members of the clan was kicked out at some point in time and we have since tried to ban this player from our servers. The type of ban used is permanent, and a hash of their software key is stored in a text file on the server. When a player joins the server, the server checks the memory location of the banned file (loaded when the server is restarted each time) and compares the entries with the player's hash and doesn't let the player in the server if there is a matching record.
Because of this, this player is now using a no CD hack/crack. I realize this is illegal, but I have no real way of stopping this person from using this tool. He has admitted in a conversation to using it. So basically, when he joins our servers, he joins with a new CD hash each time because of the no CD hack he has.
Anyway...does anyone know of a server-side utility which can check for spoofed CD keys and ban a player if found spoofing a key? Is there another way of solving this problem? I don't think Microsoft would act on providing any updates to this game, since Halo 2 will come out in June, and Halo 1 PC is a couple years old. It would be nice if they could release an update to require activation and somehow fix the infrastructure to store hashes on the Gamespy lobby and pair them with respective Windows keys...well..something along those lines.

Fixed IP, no but that doesn't matter I don't think. All you would need to do is specify the first two octets and then you could use an asterisk for the second two octets (i.e. 66.58.*.*). Yes this would block out anyone in the person's neighborhood but I don't really care. It's not THAT much of a loss.
No Halo PC doesnt even have a CDkey database, you can just type anything into it. Cuz of that theres no way to find legit or illegal differences.
I discovered this installing my copy, i put in the wrong cd key by mistake and i knew i got it wrong then it went on. I tested it with random keys after that and proved that i thought right.

Just a quick one.
Im no expert in Halo, but could you find a way to block him via MAC address?
The mac address he connects from will always be the same, its hardware coded into his pc / router.
block that either on your firewall / halo server, and no more mr cheat.
(oh and email m$ with his address, and the list of key's he's been using.)
blocking MAC addresses is pointless as its very easy to change them (many routers have a simple option for it)
also, using a no cd/dvd crack is only of dubious legality , its not necessarily piracy (and in this example certainly NOT piracy as he's using it with e legal copy purely to circumvent your measures) I use them myself to save me swapping DVDs all the time and I don't pirate games.

i don't think ...anything might be available for it ...u can store some keys in ur servers which are avalable over the net ...but it would be difficult to stop the player cause he is using no CD ...crack
i'll check the net ...and let u know !!
