I've also tried updating to the latest java version, but no change.
OS is Windows XP Media Center. Have tried both Firebird and Internet Explorer, but with the same result.

You need to install it to any admin account first
- Choose your resolution
- Then log into the World server
- Make sure all the updates are downloaded OK
- Ideally make sure the player's avatar appears OK
- Now close Runescape & your browser windows
The next thing you need to do is give the guest accounts admin access to all the downloaded Runescape folders.
These are in C:\WINDOWS\
Use the Run box to open a command window and type the following at the prompt which will give admin access to the folders and sub-folders to all accounts.
cacls "c:\windows\.jagex_cache_3
(If you need to remove permissions do the same replacing 'users:c' with 'users:r')
Then restart in the limited account and check you can log in & play OK
Post back when you can ;)
Thanks for your quick feedback!
I've used the cacls command to set the permissions of this directory tree, logged on as the non-admin user and verified the access by creating a file inside the root of that tree (where we have one file random.dat with a size of 0). I also deleted this file again and tried to start the game.
I still can't start the game and get the message "load: class loader.class not found." :(
My java version is JRE 1.6.0_07
Lars
Make sure you have the latest JRE installed into the admin account

Did you launch the game in Admin before sharing out the folders?
The zero byte .dat file should be in the user profile
C:\Docs&Settings\UserName
and called "jagex_runescape_preferenc
You may be able to get around this by (in the admin account) creating a new limited account
Since you don't need huge amounts of processing you could also run it on a virtual machine. On the virtual machine your son can be an administrator and still not wreak havok on your system. It also means that you can easily have a fresh virtual machine ready if (when) your son breaks something.

I ended up using MS/Sysinternals Process Monitor to figure out what was happening and it turned out that it needed access to C:\Windows\Temp\6.0. After granting this user access change to this directory tree I was able to launch RuneScape

You must install Runescape as an administrator but you can set the Runescape game settings in the admin account so that guest accounts can play.
Make sure you download and install the latest Java VM before installing the Runescape applet.
During admin installation set Runescape not to store any files on the harddisk (if you do store files you must give the folder selected read/write access to all users).
When launching Runescape and choosing between high-detail/low-detail make sure to select 'Unsigned Applet Using Default Java' from the dropdown scroll at the bottom of the detail select page. You will need to do this everytime you load the game. This means the game will load slower but it allows play with out admin rights.
