Question

WoW Consistent yet Random Crashing

Asked by: wysardry

So, after 3 different OS installs (XP once, Win 7 twice, each for at least a week, currently Windows 7) hard drive error scans, memtest86 for 9 or so passes, and countless reinstalls of WoW from scratch, or Repairs after errors, WoW is still unstable for me. I've ran with no addons, my favorite addons, random stuff, reset the UI a bunch, trashed everything possible from the Repair utility, tried turning off the hardware cursor (from other thread suggestions), always have updated drivers under both OSes... I'm at a loss as to what to do.

It will crash, that much is certain, and inevitable at this point. If it crashes once, I can't get back into the game unless I reboot. The error is always

"Failed to read x", where x is always a random file.

Here's the latest crash log and hardware deets, happened about a half hour into the game last night... I realize the length will put some people off, but I really, really, really would like to play again without wondering when - not if - I will crash. I'm willing to try anything at this point. It's a brand new OS install, so formatting, reinstalling - while done 3 times in the past month - is not out of the question.

Hey Wysardry,

I run a toon called "Thanor" on "Khaz Modan". GM of the guild "Provenance"

Sounds similar to an issue i was having not a month and a half ago. I would not get crash messages persay, however my game would completely freeze and i would have to restart. Im running essentially the same specs as you, the key thing is Windows 7. After doing a bunch of research i discovered that my chipset drivers were causing incompatabilities with my oboard Disk Controller. I had to go to nvidia's website and download the new chipset drivers for my motherboard: "Nvidia 650i Ultra". This immediately fixed the problem i was having and havent had a crash since.

I took the liberty of looking up the chipset that your mobo is using seems to be the "Nvidia 680i" according to this site:

http://www.evga.com/articles/329.asp

Note: eVGA does not provide chipset drivers for Windows 7, you actually have to obtain them from the Nvidia website, however you will have to determine if you are using the 32-bit or 64-bit version of windows 7, i'll provide the links below:

nForce 680i SLI:

Windows 7 32-bit drivers = http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_win7_32bit_15.35.html
Windows 7 64-bit drivers = http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_win7_64bit_15.35.html

I hope this helps wysardry

Let me know how you make out :)

How is your Wow video settings configured? Is it set to full screen or windowed mode. Do you have all setting set to high? Be wary that Windows 7 is pretty recent as drivers may not fully support it. Try to load WoW with minimal video settings like 1024X768 in 16bit mode, its not greatest setting but its been know to be stable setup under my Window 7 PC. Try this link and hope it help shed some light :

So far so good, been quite a few hours without a crash. Well, there was one...

I swapped out and opened up Google Chrome to surf around on a long flight, and it crash within a few minutes with an unreadable file. I usually keep a few programs running in the background, since they cause no gameplay degradation, but it was highly interesting to me that after hours of solid gameplay, a few moments of Chrome surfing crashed WOW. Interesting in a bad way, of course.

I since ran a Repair on the files, just to make sure, and they came up OK for a change - usually when it starts reading files as bad, the Repair util wants to repatch everything.

I've uninstalled Chrome, just in case, and would like to test a few more days to be sure, but it seems very much like everything's OK again!

by: wysardryPosted on 2009-07-23 at 07:07:44ID: 24925342

Died again, was a little crashy last night - bluescreen, and once on zoning - but rebooted, got in OK. Finally crashed while flying, and the dreaded "Failed to read" error popped up again.

Ran the Repair utility, and sure enough, files are corrupted again. I'm running through the repair process now.

@jozman: thanks for the suggestion, this did happen under a new installation of XP as well, so I don't /think/ it's win7. Could be more than one problem, though, I'm still at a loss.

I'm going to try Passmark BurnInTest today, see if I can't stress the crap out of the system, and find out more info. Something's wrong, and it's only happening to WOW. The only commonality has been the video drivers, both under XP and Win 7. Well, aside from the hardware, of course.

I hate computers today. :)

This is interesting:

http://myreader.co.uk/msg/102016318.aspx

I found this browsing some forums looking for a olution to your problem wysardry. It seems that this guy has been having persistent HD failures with the same model drive...

Have you actually swapped out the drives and attempted to use a diferrent HD or set of HD's. I still think that this is coming down to one of four remaining problems. The consistent file corruption and read errors are leading me to believe its the case:

1. The most likely given the post above is that you have a faulty hard drive or a drive that has been dmged from overheating or a power spike. To confirm this i would try re-installing to a different hard drive.

2. A faulty SATA cable. I find SATA cables to be far more flimsy then their IDE counterparts. Check to make sure that the cable is not coming lose from the connector socket on either ends, even if it doesnt't look to be damaged try using a different cable.

3. Your motherbaord (and im assuming your drives are plugged into the onboard MOBO disk controller) disk controller is faulty and causing data to be written and read to the HD inconsistently.

4. Although this may seem unlikely, your processor may have suffered damage as well, either from overheating or bad power. (Note: i consider this to be a last resort, i have hardly ever run into processor problems, but they do exist)

I know this doesnt narrow it down very much but i'd bet the farm that its a problem between the disk controller and the hard drive. You have already updated the drivers so you have ruled that out as a possibility.

Keep us posted Wysardry and good luck :)

Awesome info - I did try all that, 3 drives, different cable, different ports, and ran the crap out of BurnInTest last night, everything shows up rosy. Prior to this post, I used a [name escapes me] utility to sector-scan all my drives for error-prone/weak/bad sectors, and that passed with no errors or worries. But you're right, it has to be hard drive related, the file corruption couldn't really be anything else that I can think of, aside from Windows 7 being beta-y.

I did a quick Google on "windows 7 partition table", and lo, there were posts regarding missing files, hosed tables, etc. I had used Acronis Partition Manager with my previous installation - in the days that my system wasn't crash-like - and had several partitions and drives. I've since formatted, but I seem to remember Windows 7 not seeming (or offering) to do a non-quick format, just installing and going.

I'm going to use DBAN tonite, wipe everything completely clean, head back to XP, driver up, and copy over my currently Repaired WOW install from backup. I'll run Repair again, since I'm pretty sure it does checksum stuff, and game the living hell out of the system until I can either make it crash, or die trying. :)

one thing to point out is that trying different ports on the board is not necessarily a full test of your disk controller...one disk controller on the board will control all port there are simply different serial busses on the same controller so you may still have a controller problem. only way to test that is put in a disk controller card or try a different mobo with the drives.

by: wysardryPosted on 2009-08-06 at 12:46:54ID: 25037368

I don't disagree with the controller test, but all the stress-tests I've thrown at the drive have come up with no errors, after days of testing. Also, this really started happening when I went to Windows 7, so there was something there as well. The hardware tested clean, and the system was rock stable prior to all this, so the only other option to me was, what was new? Windows 7, that was new, of course, but so were - the drivers, which, on the old OS, were probably over a year old, easy... I'm an "if it ain't broke" kinda guy.

I started going back in time with the drivers. Searching around, there are some obscure complaints regarding the 680i and/or 8800 genres of nvidia stuff, and the newest drivers nvidia offers. I've now gone back to the Forceware video drivers, and the 9.x series of nforce drivers, reached by inching back in time as stability improved. There are still some occasional crashes - once every 6-7 hours, maybe - but most importantly, there's no WOW file corruption, repair comes up clean every time. I believe I've found the problem, but not the perfect combination of drivers yet. Every time it crashes, I try a new build. I'll see if something magic happens over the next few days.

by: wysardryPosted on 2009-08-21 at 07:11:12ID: 25151953

Apparently I didn't test the memory long enough.... let it run all night and day, and found a bad stick. The previous 3-4 hours tests weren't long enough, I guess. Removed the stick, and ran memtest for 48 hours, no errors. It's made the crashes less frequent, they still happen, but different stuff now, it's always in the display driver. Seems I was fighting more than one problem.

There's seemingly a lot of problems with nVidia's drvers, and the 8800 GTS, especially in the new stuff. You can take your pick of threads to read;

http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=8800+gts+crash+2009+190&btnG=Search&meta=

I've gone back to 182.46, through trial and error and on the suggestions of an amalgam of threads, and things are getting better. I sure wish I would have taken note of that magical driver combo I had on my box before all this happened.

Can't get anything to work in 3D, and things crash far more in Vista and 7 than in XP. I'm going to say the video card is fried, and be done with it, give it to my mom for an email/Facebook machine - still works great as long as no 3D is invoked - and be done with it, already ordered up a new box (it was time anyway). Thanks for all the help, folks!
