The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

3D Hardware/DirectX problem (mainly Counterstrike)

Wondering if anyone can help me out with this, as I am a bit of a self confessed expert myself, yet I'm completely stumped!

My old PC:   PIII 233, 128Mb RAM, S3 Savage 8Mb PCI and DirectX 7

I was running the latest Half-Life v1104 and Counterstrike 1.0 and everything was pefectly fine. I would run at 640x480 in Software, OpenGL or Direct3D mode, no worries, great gameplay  :-)

My new PC:   AMD 1.2GHz, 256 Mb PC133, S3 Savage 8Mb PCI and DirectX 7

Running same versions of HL and CS, but I would get a lockup upon joining a game! Nothing would work (CTRL-ALT-DEL, ALT-TAB, ESC, etc) all I could do was hit the power switch! It would do this in both OpenGL and Direct3D mode, but the Software mode would work OK. From this I presumed that I had a 3D driver issue.

I had already ordered a new video card (GeForce 2 Pro 64Mb AGP) so I thought I'd leave CounterStrike alone, and wait until I recived the new card. Upon receiving the GeForce card, I duly installed it (with the latest nVidia v650 drivers).

I still could not get CS to work, again the same lock up happened in either OpenGL or Direct3D, but not in Software mode (in fact Software mode could run in any resolution also). From all this I decided that it was time to go to DirectX 8.0, which I have done, but still the same situation!

I am at my wits end as to what to do. I am going to upgrade the Mainboard BIOS tonight, as it is the only thing left I can think of!!

Any ideas...  or solutions... would be most welcome.

Thanks, Paul.
