applications for oppening games?!?

Hey i run winXP and i have several files that are games and i cannot figure out what i need to open them. I tried to just click on it but nothing happens. Then i tried to use daemon tools to mount it but appears not to be a copy of a CD which is what I thought it was. When i go to properties all it tells me is that it is an application and that is .exe. Is there any program that can look at a file and tell me what i need to open it or what kind of file it is? this is not really important but i have a few of these files so i dont think they are just garbage. the file is 700mb so it relativly big.
