half life 2 runs very very slow with console on

Just started playing the game recently and got tired of getting killed. Turned on the cheat console and enabled the god option. The game used to run respectably well ...(2200+AMD, 512ram,ATI9250videocard) ... and now it runs dog tired slow at the same settings .... its pretty well unplayable.
Is this normal?
.....and ... when I enable the console, my cursor messes up .... when I change cursor position, the console box also moves in synch with the mouse.
...and don't know ifthis matters but my target in icon properties on desktop is ..."C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\usrx\half-life 2\hl2.exe" -console

and ...start in .... C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\usrx\half-life 2"
