MAME starter questions
a few years ago a techie friend showed me a video arcade box in his basement saying it was a MAME box. I googled that and got into all that it offered.
I wound up buying a video game shell, took a windows PC and monitor and mounted them in there, bought a bunch of arcade buttons and the button to keyboard converter gadget (to map buttons to specific keyboards.
I never got it right - my kids would play games but then they'd press the wrong button and it wouldn't run, I'd fiddle with it and get things going again.
The friend talked about Mamewah as the interface and I played with that.
I want to get this going again before my wife makes me toss the video game case.
Can anyone point me to shortcuts / info on how to get this all going correctly / what buttons should map to what keys (should I have the escape key on the console?), etc. I know we had fun for a while with it.

1 other question if you don't mind? 1 thing that was daunting is the 5000+ games that come up in the mamewah list - do you or conventional wisdom filter out some to make the list more managable? Sure it's neat to have so many games, but there's sometimes several versions of the same game / which to choose, etc..

Yea that's easy just create some File Folders or Directories and Sub Directories as it is command line based and place the games where you want by whatever organization style fits your needs. As for multiple versions, you can usually tell from the first level or three if you'll enjoy that version so just delete the ones you don't or better yet have a junk directory so you can use them later if you find you didn't like one you originally selected.

The esc key is listed as a command to escape to windows so I think you might need different emulators to run some games, I would try having a keyboard hooked up in back to modify anything and access seperate utilities when necessary, but only by you not your kids unless they are proficient enough to troubleshoot.
