Phantasy Star Universe Online: Disconnects while trying to find update

After purchasing a subscription to play the Phantasy Star Universe game online I have been unable to get my system to download the update system file so I can play online.

I have the first edition of the game for Playstation 2 and have been able to get the game to connect to the internet. However, in order to play, it must download the system file - but once it reaches this point it freezes and loses the connection.

My Playstation 2 is connected to my cable modem via an ethernet cable.

Any ideas of why this could be happening?
