The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Unable to host games on Madden 2008. Can you help?

Tags: madden, 2008, host
This is just an annoying problem... just for personal purposes, but its bugs me nonetheless!

Can someone help me figure out why I'm unable to host a game on Madden 2008?

I've put my computer into the DMZ zone on my wireless router. I've opened up all the local ports on my firewall. I have a good connection (2 MB down, 700k up) , yet it never lets me host a game.

I can connect to games that other people host just fine.

Also, no other online game gives me problems like this.

What am I missing?

Are you able to host (rather than play) other online games on your PC?
Do you have port forwarding set?  (This will affect connectivity in the DMZ and you may be better using fixed IP addressing and port forwarding - the TCP/UDP ports are the same as earlier versions of Madden so you need to forward ports 1795 & 1797).

There are some basic connectivity tips on EA's support pages
http://tinyurl.com/2d3kua

For fixed addresses and portforwarding outside of DMZ find your router here: http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm
Then choose Madden '07 for instructions.

I thought for sure the instructions at portforward would do it, but it still isn't working.

When I use EA's UOTRACE Utility, and I trace a link, I get nothing but "*Unknown Host*" for all hops. IS that part of the problem?

Unknown host just means the servers you are hopping to are set not to reveal their identity (Or you may not have DNS enabled). Try using TRACERT for the same destination.

This looks like a local issue with either firewalling or filters.  If you are confident that the router is allowing traffic in and out unobstructed on the ports the game needs then the next suspect is the PC itself. Double check the Windows firewall is allowing these ports as exceptions.  Any other security installed that might be treating connections from outside as a threat?

If you are not using the DMZ you MUST have fixed IP addresses for the port forwarding to be successful and so not be using DHCP (this means you will need to manually set DNS server addresses on your PC - your ISP can provide these or you could use http://www.opendns.com/)

Hmmm

Well I set my router t give me a fixed IP address, then I opened the UDP ports as specified at the http://www.portforward.com/ website (cool site), and directed them to the fixed address as instructed.

I also contacted my ISP and they gave me a fixed address.

I  did find an improvement in my ability to connect to games with other users. However I'm still unable to host games myself.

I'm not running any other security of firewall type programs.

IS there a particular protocol that need to be active on my connection? Are there any other culprits on the PC side that could be causing this?

You should just need the TCP/IP protocol so that people can join your games.
Don't forget that people joining will need your external IP address (the one the ISP organises not the one your router allocates). The router needs to support both TCP and UDP protocols for the ports listed above.  If it has its own firewall this should allow traffic on those ports to pass unhindered.

Are you certain Windows Firewall is not enabled on your PC and you have no other software runnng that could be defending your computer from external connections??
Accepted Solution

I tried it before with disabling the firewall, but at that time I didn't have the 2 fixed IP addresses. I'll try again without Windows firewall and report back.

Make sure you check madden 2008 in the windows firewall.  It will block when you host if not checked....
