Transfer songs from iPod to new computer

I've read a lot of "stuff" on transferring songs from my iPod to a new computer.  Seems like pretty scary stuff.  Is there an easy way to do this.  I definitely do not want to wipe out all the songs on my iPod.

You can do this by downloading a program called Media Monkey.
Do you have a CD/DVD burner? You could also do a similar process if you have both PC's networked.

Copy all of your music tracks (typically in My Documents/My Music/ITunes folder) to CD's/DVD's. Copy them as data files and not as audio tracks (i.e. you aren't trying to make an audio CD).

Now that you have all of your music backed up, click and drag the files (song folders) from the CD/DVD's to the Library icon in the iTunes window. The folders and all the songs in them will be copied into iTunes.

Also make sure you click on "Advanced" - "Consolidate Library" after each transfer of files. I am not sure if that is a necessary step in this cae, but it couldn't hurt.

Good luck!

SteveL13,

The best option is to go from the old computer to the new computer.  Is that an option?  The instructions TK-77 provided will help with this.  It will allow you to quickly set up the new computer with the same library, playlists, etc you had on the old.  This won't happen usually when copying the files from the iPod itself.

Make sure you also copy the library files that are actually in the iTunes folder TK-77 mentioned and not just the music folders and files.  Copy them onto the new computer after running iTunes once.  This will make a similar folder on the new computer.  The result will be the new iTunes will be set up with the same library, playlists, etc as the old computer with very little work.  I can provide more details on this if you need so just let me know.

Don't forget to deauthorize the previous computer if you use iTunes on it.

Let me know if you have any questions or need more information.  If you have to move from an iPod and the first post doesn't work then let me know.

p.s.  Marking the option to consolidate library isn't needed for this.  Personally I don't use the option because I want to manage the media files and their location myself.

The old computer is dead.  So the songs only live on the iPod.  Need to transfer them to the new computer.

Thanks for clarifying.  I suggest you start by looking at the guide at http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/copying-music-from-ipod-to-computer/ .  The guide on that page is good but a little long.  Worth the read though if you will be doing this.  Page 3 of that guide lists some programs you can use to copy the music.  I have seen other experts recommend using the program at http://www.ephpod.com/ for this but haven't used it myself and don't see its website listing this as a feature.

Your concern about wiping out the contents of your iPod is covered in that guide.  Basically it is related to not having a library on the new computer so you want to make sure not to sync the iPod when you first connect it to the new computer.

Let me know if you have a question or need more info.
