How do I wifi sync my iPhone 3gs with IOS 5.0 to iTunes?

On my iphone,  iTunes Wi-Fi sync says
Sync will resume when "My-PC" is available.

It does not let me sync to my "Windows Vista" laptop.

I am not sure if it's firewall settings, iphone 3gs settings, or what. It does sync when I plug in the usb cable.

What I have tried:

I installed bonjour print services (though I don't know how to use it.)
in Norton Internet security: Program control:
..........set Bonjour service to allow
..........set iTunes to Allow
Ping from pc command prompt to my iphone  ip address (says host not reachable)
Plugging in iphone to power outlet
Plugging into usb on itunes, then disconnecting again.
I am running: iTunes 10, ios 5 (iphone), vista home premium service pack 2

It feels like the pc is blocking the access somehow. but im not sure.

In iTunes, have you checked the box that says "Sync with this phone over Wifi"?

Hi yes i have checked that box.
You need to plug your phone into itunes once you have that box ticked and run a sync. You should get a message about sync'ing wirelessly and then anytime your computer is avaliable wirelessly and your phone is connected to a power source it should sync. I have it on my iPhone4 and hate it. iTunes constantly opens itself.. Haven't had the time to diagnose it yet so might just be my computer heh. Good luck.
I have synced it with the box checked.  I dont get the message but i may have received the message originally.  I cant remember.  Like i have said, my phone thinks it will be able to sync the next time it sees my computer on the wireless network.  It just can't see it.

Thank you anyway for the suggestions.
If you go into settings -> General -> Itunes Wifi sync and attempt to sync (while connected to power and your PC on) what errors do you get?
It says " sync will resume when 'My PC' is available. And i cannot Select the sync button.
Disable the firewall on your computer and see if that resolves it.
Do you have any other devices in your wifi-network you can try to ping or connect to?
If not, perhaps your wifi-router is the issue.
Have you turned off and on your iPhone?

Hi.
I have tried turning off the firewall - doesn't help

I don't have other computers, but I can wifi transfer files with goodreader typing in the ip address of my phone.  Therefore it is not a wireless connection problem.

maybe the router or computer doesn't like the port it is using?

Does Bonjour print services give my computer a name on the network rather than just an IP address.  I think maybe the phone can't see my computer name?

I also have tries turning my phone off many times.

thanks
OK I have installed the iNet app. (free version)

It has found my PC

 It says:
Host is hidden (did not reply to ping request)
 netBios detected
No Bonjour services detected

I suspect it at least needs to see bonjour?
Needs bonjour.  What make/model router do you have?   SMC?
I have a DLINK DSL-2730B.

I tried setting up port forwarding for port 5353, with UDP protocol.

here's my setup:
Server External External Protocol Internal Internal Server IP Schedule
Name Port Port Port Port Address Rule
          Start End Start End
iTunes 5353 5353 UDP 5353 5353 192.168.1.12 Always
iTunesP 5353 5353 UDP 5353 5353 192.168.1.8 Always

How do I know bonjour is running on my computer?  I installed the bonjour print services program, but I don't see anything like bonjour running in task manager.
Sorry, I just looked in my 'services' and found Bonjour Service. (C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe)

It is set to:
startup type: automatic,
Log on as 'Local system account:    Checked
"Allow service to interact with desktop": unchecked
This account":  unchecked.
There's no need to do any port forwarding at all; port forwarding is only an issue when you're trying to communicate from OUTSIDE your network to inside, and all of the conversation between your devices is happening inside your network.

Many DLink routers are buggy, specifically not working with bonjour.  Are you running the latest firmware in the router (Version 1.01)?

If so, consider trying a different brand of router (but not SMC, which also is known for having this problem).  Perhaps you could temporarily borrow one from a friend, rather than dropping any money.

Thanks Akahan,

my router was not on 1.01.  So I have since upgraded - now using 1.01
I can however print to my wireless printer (it seems it uses bonjour - which i didn't realise earlier)

.....although it is quite tempermental, as it was before.
After the upgrade to 1.01, I had to change the bonjour name in th printer in order for it to work.
And in the past I have often had to reset things (printer/iPhone) to get them to connect.

so i guess that means the dlink router is able to use the service, though I agree it might not work verry well.

if I could do the same and select a bonjour name somehow it might fix it.

I haven't been able to try it on another network, but I should be able to in the next few days.  I guess this is the only possibility left.

Thank you for the solution,  It turned out that everyone I know has a dlink router so unable to check this.  In light of this fact I need to close this question, but I think that the dlink probably was the problem.
