I have an AMD XP 2400+, ASUS A7V8X-X motherboard, 512 MB RAM, ATI Radeon 9000 Pro, 1x CDROM, 1x CDRW, 1x modem, 1x SCSI card, 2x hard drives, 1x floppy drive. I have a 300 watt power supply (although an article on Tom's Hardware indicates you can't always believe you'll actually get that).
I attempted to install an extra SCSI card and a 5th hard drive. When I turned my PC back on, the power light blinked on for a millisecond, then off. After that, it was completely dead. It should be noted that I was trying this extra SCSI card (PCI) and hard drive because I was having problems with this setup in another machine and I wanted to test to see if it was the drive or SCSI card. Could the SCSI card have fried the motherboard? The SCSI card is a ATTO ExpressPCI UL2D, and the 5th hard drive was a 10,000 RPM SCSI drive (rated at 0.8 amps at 5v and 1.1 amps at 12v).
The LED on the motherboard is on. I tried resetting the BIOS, unplugging all peripherals (except for floppy drive), and I checked the fuse on the Power Supply. I even tried a different power cord.
This evening I thought I would try again, and it powered up! Only problem is the display was garbled . To view a photo of the garbled screen, see:
http://www.camgiesbrecht.com/ps/I had noticed a slight electrical hot/burning smell coming from the power supply for about the last 2 months, and recently my motherboard has not seen my IDE devices on POST (most likely due to not being powered, however I could never confirm this myself).
There is nothing visibly "blown" inside the power supply, but I do fear the worst: did I blow the motherboard, the power supply, or BOTH (worse!)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
