The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Advice wanted for new computer compared to what I already have

Asked by auraorange in Computer CPU Processors, Computer Memory (RAM), Hardware Components

Hi all
My current machine consists of:

Pentium 4 2.8ghz 478 with 512 cache
Elitegroup motherboard
1Gb ddr ram
1 * 160gb 7200 ide drive
1 * 80 gb 7200 ide drive (for backup)
DVD Rom
DVD Writer
400watt psu
Floppy drive
XP Pro

I am looking to upgrade all of the above components e.g.

CPU - but i'm not sure what due and quad processors mean.. in plain english is a 2.4 quad processor better than what I have? is it 2.4 * 4 = 9.6 ghz?

Motherboard -  I'm happy to select my own motherboard as i'd want as many PCI sockets as possible and probably the ability to attach sata & ide plus up to 4gb memory

RAM - I always see people on about having say 4gb of ram... is it necessary? Whenever I look at my task manager the cpu always seems to be running at around 50-60% all the time but my memory with 1gb always seems in much lower demand...

Sata 2 - I'm happy with using sata 2 and that now they out perfrom ide with regards to speed

PSU, Floppy, Disk drives  - I'm happy to choose these myself

OS - I'm ready to go with VISTA and probably the home premium version as I intend on using the machine for both business use and playing games.

ALL FEEDBACK WITH BE APPRECIATED, HOWEVER, I WOULD LIKE TO CONCENTRATE ON THE CPU AND RAM AS THESE TWO COMPONENTS SEEM TO BE THE KEY TO A HIGH PERFORMANCE.

Thank you, Aura
