I'd buy a Core 2 Duo E8500 (or an E8600 ... but the E8500 is a much better value). Yes, it's a dual core CPU ==> but even when only using one core it's FAR faster than any single core CPU you can buy. The OS (assuming it's a Windows based system) will still gain significant performance from the 2nd core even if your primary application is only using one of the cores.

It depends on operations type.
For some AMDs are much faster for some Intel ones.
Generally you have to look for highest clock speed measured in GHz.
Testing AMD vs. Intel makes a lot of sense in such case.
