I have an older ABIT KG7-R motherboard with an XP2800 AMD Socket [A] 462 proc.
Last fall, I was cleaning the CPU fan with a can of air while the computer was running. That was my first mistake, as I was blowing the dust off the CPU fan, I slipped and the nozzle of the air can wedged in the CPU fan breaking off a few fan blades. Mistake #2, I started the computer back up with the CPU fan running without a few blades. It vibrated alot, but the computer still ran, and as I need my computer to make money, I kept using it. Eventually, I started having posting problems. I would hit the power button, the computer would start, but immediately shut itself off. Maybe another 20 tries, it would post, and run fantastic. I decided maybe the fan wasn't cooling enough, DUH! And I replaced the CPU heatsink/fan with a super huge replacement.
This worked wonderfully, except that still had to hit the power button 50 times before it would post.
My response was to leave the computer turned on. And I did for 8 months until the replacement CPU fan failed. Not because I was dumb, it just quit working period. I didn't realize it immediately. Only after looking at the BIOS, that proc was running a core Temp of 200+ degrees.
So I replaced the Proc, I bought a used XP3000, put it the computer. The only difference was that it posted every time, but also would get so hot it shut itself down within minutes. I reserved myself into thinking this may possibly be a motherboard problem. With nothing to loose, I swapped the XP3000 with a Duron 950, and poof the system is running slow, but it works. However the CPU core now reads 0'C or 32'F.
