The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Suspect PSU death.  Need confirmation.

Recently, I have been experiencing PC blackouts, usually while playing a game.  I had thought this problem was due to overheating and ventillated the case by opening the side and letting a cool outdoor breeze blow through it during operation.  However, these blackouts became more and more frequent and now the PC won't turn on for more than < 1 second.  Thankfully, my ABIT motherboard displays the POST code on a little 2x7-segment display on the motherboard.  Each time it flashes up to 8.3. and then power goes out.  I have tried switching power cables, thinking the fuse may have blown, but this did not help.

By the AC2003 POST Code Definitions:

8.1. Start power sequence
8.2. Enable ATX power supply
8.3. ATX power supply ready

I suspect my PSU has bitten the dust.  It is a Antec Neopower 480W power supply that is now just past warranty.  Do you think I've gotten unlucky and fell victim to the curse of the 3-year warranty?  Recently, I installed a dual-core processor with an aftermarket HSF to improve cooling of the chip.  I was sure to apply sufficient thermal grease to the top of the chip before bolting down the HSF.

Also noteworthy, I am running 4 x RAM DIMM, 4 x hard drive, 1 x 19" monitor, 1 x DVD+RW, and a Radeon X850 with a silent heatsink mod.  I believe the PSU is capable of handling this load.

Any ideas, suggestions, recommendations to test these conditions?Start Free Trial
