Question

CPU FAN STAYS AT HIGH SPEED AFTER HIBERNATION

Asked by: m171271

When I bring mt toshiba satillite laptop out of hibernation the fan stays at high speed. I have found what I think might work but havew no idea how to implement the fix. Anybody help me implement the fix of give me a different one. here is the fix I found:

Create the following script. in /etc/acpi/resume.d/75-dual-core-cpu-freq.sh

#!/bin/sh

SYS_DIR=/sys/devices/system/cpu
#POLICY=performance
###
# POLICY can be any of:
# userspace powersave ondemand conservative performance
#
POLICY=ondemand

for CPU in `ls $SYS_DIR`
do
  echo -n $POLICY > $SYS_DIR/$CPU/cpufreq/scaling_governor
done
#==========

Now the policy will be set correctly after a resume from hibernate or suspend state.

This seems to be a known issue for some models. In two threads I have read a possible solution is  to reinstall the intel chipset driver on top of the existing installation.

I have a satellite a105  s4004, yeah tried windows. I am going to try a program called Notebook Hardware control. Only problem I see with this is the mass of icons appering in my bottom right 5 to be exact and that after I told it to monitor cpu speed only. I am able to run the cpu at 830mhz insted of 1660mhz. I will run this for an hour or two then will uninstall and then install the Toshiba software from link you sent me. I appreciate your fast detailed response.

So I have the notebook hardware control software installed and set at max battary, just opened the laptop and fan is at full speed still. CPU running at 1ghz  tempreture is 21-22c so plenty cool enough.  Still I have no access to Toshiba Power Saver. How will I get Access to the Toshiba Power Utillity??

by: m171271Posted on 2008-01-20 at 17:44:24ID: 20703350

Solved problem of no access to Toshiba Power Utillity, If an OEM orf just none Toshiba installation of windows is done, the Toshiba common modules are not installed these are needed to run the Toshiba Power Utillity. http://www.opendrivers.com/freedownload/234316/toshiba-acpi-common-modules-1.00.22se-windows-xp-download.html
Will get back in around an hour and let you know if the Toshiba Utillity worked for the fan problem..

by: pheidiusPosted on 2008-01-20 at 17:55:43ID: 20703397

Yea, I noticed that line of attack as well. The second link in one of my posts detailed the common module issue towards the bottom but  I didn't push it as you seemed to not want to use that ute. Hopefully, its successful installation solves the problem.
