Question

Help deciding on getting a laptop with Nvidia Geforce 9200

Asked by: end123

Hi experts..

was just about getting a dell XPS 1330 when i discovered some issues (http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2008/09/12/nvidia-gpu-update-limited-warranty-enhancement-details.aspx) with the Nvidia Geforce 8400 graphics on it.. now am so confused on which one to get. Then I saw samsung Q310, spec looks promising too, but now am sceptical about the graphics card (Geforce 9200 GS) because the series is reported to have issues too.

My question is would they now be selling those chips without fixing the issues with them, since Dell apparently is still doing that. And what do you  think about samsung laptops.. thanks.

I haven't heard anything about the 9200 - I thought the problems were confined to the 8400m gs and 8600m gt.  The people on the Dell site were asking about replacing their 8400's with a 9xxx series gpu, and I tried searching for 9200 gs problems, but didn't get any hits.  The Samsung got a good review here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=293783

saw the G9200 issue here: http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/08/12/nvidia-g92s-g94-reportedly.
also just saw these: http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/product/Portege-M800-106/1056015/ . similar spec but dunno know what a white laptop will be like..not sure i have seen one except the macs..anyone reviewed/used this?

There is something wrong with the reporting in that article.  The 8800GT with the G92 chipset has been out for a long time and has been embraced by the gaming community as one of the best performance values out there (I have one myself).  With that kind of popularity and public exposure, a fundamental problem would have been reported long ago, but there has been no such thing, and hardware sites like tomshardware and anandtech have continued to position the product as a good mid-level card.  I suspect the author either has a personal axe to grind or doesn't check his facts because it has not been independently confirmed by others.  Take a look at the customer reviews on newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130318

so in your opinion, there shouldnt be any issue with the 9200? and please, what do you think about the toshiba?

by: end123Posted on 2008-10-22 at 08:20:18ID: 22777591

and this is a tomshardware article: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Nvidia-GPU-failure,6248.html
..get me right, am really leaning towards getting this hardware..just need to be sure its fine..so i wont go through the replacement route as i did with my last notebook (pavilion dv6000 series). cant afford some weeks downtime because of a manufacturer's problem..

So far, the problems seem to be limited to the 8400m and 8600m chipsets; I haven't seen any G92 reports (but that doesn't mean they don't exist).  The tomshardware article was fairly informative and seems to be saying heat cycling plus bad solder is causing cracks in the circuit; this tends to happen more frequently in laptops than desktops due to the tight spaces and diminished cooling.  It sounds reasonable, though as I said, I haven't seen many reports of G92 chip suffering the same effects, so it could be speculation at this point.  If you want to play it safe, ATI and Intel are good alternatives, and the Toshiba looks like a good model.  I have always liked Toshiba for their performance and looks and have a Tecra M4 myself.  Otherwise, Lenovo laptops would be my other choice.

after reading that first link you sent me..m really leaning on the Samsung..especially because of the whitish colour of the toshiba..but please can you confirm this:
"Hi.

The G98 i the 9200m GS is not on that list, as i said it is not affected.

Regards

John."

i posted same question in that thread, and got that answer

As I said, I haven't seen any reports on the G92 having the same problem.  Here's another review of the Samsung Q310: http://www.trustedreviews.com/notebooks/review/2008/10/11/Samsung-Q310--ASS0UK--13-3in-Notebook/p1
