Question

Dell keeps popping error message "Alert! Previous fan failure"

Asked by: syssolut

I am working on a Dell 4300.   It had a case fan that burnt out.   So I got a new case fan and hooked it onto the same connection on the board as the burnt out one.   Everytime  I bootup I get the error message, "Alert! Previous fan failure" "Hit F1 to continue.  Hit f2 to go to setup"   I have been in setup and wiped out and made read all previous alerts.   How do I stop this message from happening?   Does Dell make it so it has to be the identical fan?   It is the same size as the burnt one, or at least as close to it as possible.   Any ideas?

Hi there,

If you have gone into the setup and configured the fan settings, try pressing F1 upon boot-up. Go into windows then reboot.
Does it come up with the warning again after that?

Hope this helps

Three things...

Did you replace it with an oem fan? I know it sounds stupid, but much of a Dell system is proprietary and any old 12v fan may not work correctly in providing the feedback/sense lines to the system. If it doesn't, you will keep getting the message.

Go to the event log in BIOS and clear the whole thing. You should be able to delete all the events listed.

Lastly, try setting the "Report keyboard failure" to OFF. I know... this makes no sense either, but will sometimes work.

Frostburn:   I did what you had described already and it kept coming up with the warning.

Flubbster:   No it is not an OEM fan.   BUt I did what you about shutting off Keyboard report  and it goes right into a full boot.  It worked.

Thanks
