The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Stubborn system inoperable

Asked by kellyhopkinsville in Computer Memory (RAM), Operating Systems Miscellaneous, Windows XP Operating System

After a series of severe BIOS checksum errors and crashes my previous computer died (running windows XP professional, sp 2). I wanted a working computer and I also wanted to salvage the HD and the data on it. So I purchased a new motherboard (Biostar P4M80-M4 with a Pentium 4, 2.8GHz) and tower and switched my old peripherals (DIMMs, Gainward GeForce 3 4x AGP video card, Belkin Hi-speed USB 2.0 and firewire card, soundblaster/audigy 24-bit card and front panel interface, Toshiba DVD/CD player, memorex DVD/CD burner, maxtor 60 GB hard drive, generic floppy) into it. Installation was not a problem, but when I put it all together and switched on, the lights went on and the fans ran but nothing happened -- computer didn't boot. According to the MB manual, this was a "system inoperable" condition and I should check the installation of the DIMMs (which I had accomplished correctly, or so I thought). I reinstalled them, with no luck initially, but on the third or fourth try the computer started! However, Windows wouldn't start, so I did a repair install from my windows disk. The computer then came on in windows and there was my previous installation, data intact! The next step was to install my sound card, which I like to install separately because windows tries to load its own drivers and I want to avoid that. I installed the sound card and hooked up the cables and when I turned the computer on, nada -- lights on but nobody home. It's the system inoperable condition. Repeated re-installation of the DIMM have had no effect. Very annoying.

Please note that the computer isn't booting so I have no video to display helpful error messages. Also, when I was closing up the tower after soundcard installation, I connected power to an extra fan. It ran just fine but the computer didn't work! In subsequent attempts to start the computer I have left this fan disconnected; I have also, in desperation, removed the sound card. But nothing has worked. I'm all out of ideas and hope maybe somebody out there can suggest something. Thanks.
