Browse All TopicsWhat does the VmSize column from a ps command really mean?
running on a linux 2.6.8.1 kernel on MIPS
a ps shows my app has 3 threads:
PID PRI Uid VmSize Stat Command
163 0 root 764 S < app
185 0 root 764 S < app
186 0 root 764 S < app
/proc/meminfo reports
MemTotal: 28644 kB
MemFree: 508 kB
then I "activate" my app (make it do it's steady state work)
and a ps shows:
163 0 root 2836 S < app
185 0 root 2836 S < app
186 0 root 2836 S < app
17439 0 root 2836 S < app
17440 0 root 2836 S < app
17445 0 root 2836 S < app
17446 0 root 2836 S < app
17447 0 root 2836 S < app
17448 0 root 2836 S < app
17451 0 root 2836 S < app
17452 0 root 2836 S < app
MemTotal: 28644 kB
MemFree: 180 kB
so my app spawned 8 additional threads (each with VmSize growing 2099 "units") while freemem only dropped by 328k.
