Question

Windows 2003 enterprise R2 server not seeing more than 3.5 GB RAM memory

Asked by: markbenham

I have installed server 2003 enterprise R2 with SP2 on 2 HP Proliant DL 380 G5 servers running as a cluster, both servers have resently been upgraded to 8 GB RAM The problem is that the OS do not see more than 3.5 GB RAM, I wonder how to fix so the os can se all 8 GB RAM. The bios is seeing the Ram fine and ram checks come back fine. Is there any reason why the OS wont see the additional memory?

Thanks

This queestion has been discussed here many times - its a limitation of 32bit OSs. While the theoretical limit is 4Gb some of the  address spaced is used to control I/O and the PCI bus. the result is that the OS cannot see more than 3.25-3.75Gb of ram even when 4Gb is installed. If tou want to use all the momory the only solution is to use a 64bit machine with a 64bit OS

strange are you sure it is enterprise you have installed and not standard?

try the /PAE switch in the boot.ini

by: markbenhamPosted on 2007-09-19 at 04:49:56ID: 19919769

yes it is definatly enterprise we couldnt run it on 64bit as exchange would run over the cluster and is not suppoirted over 64 bit.
2003 standard does not support clustering so i am 100% sure it is enterprise.

by: Network_Data_SupportPosted on 2007-09-19 at 04:54:55ID: 19919800

put the /PAE switch in the boot.ini

by: andyalderPosted on 2007-09-19 at 04:55:12ID: 19919802

As Network_Data_Support says /PAE also works with standard edition. Whether your application can use memory relocated to above 4GB is down to the individual app' though, for example with SQL2005 you have to set the awe enable option to 1 before it will use it.

Exchange 2003 32 bit won't use the relocated RAM anyway, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823440/

by: markbenhamPosted on 2007-09-19 at 05:47:17ID: 19920088

Will relocated RAM now show up in the Control Panel - System, because its still saying 3.5GB RAM

by: Network_Data_SupportPosted on 2007-09-19 at 05:57:11ID: 19920169

should say in system propities how much ram you have

by: Network_Data_SupportPosted on 2007-09-19 at 05:58:47ID: 19920182

should show 8 gb anyway without /PAE on a enterprise server so must have a different problem

by: andyalderPosted on 2007-09-19 at 06:24:43ID: 19920366

There is a BIOS setting that affects it, under Advanced then CPU called Data Execution Prevention I think, that should be turned on. Also turn on Intel virtualization here. Finally you may have turned on RAM mirroring but you'd still see 4GB if the PAE kernel was loaded.

SP2 enables PAE by default, is there a /NOPAE flag in boot.ini or a /MAXMEM flag?

by: markbenhamPosted on 2007-10-17 at 23:15:01ID: 20098990

Found out without /PAE it will not see the extra memory, so 'Network Data SDupports' comment about SP2 by default is incorrect all works OK now System incontrol panel shows all memory

by: Network_Data_SupportPosted on 2007-10-18 at 00:14:55ID: 20099162

didnt say about sp2  its enterprise  but glad  u sorted it

by: markbenhamPosted on 2007-10-18 at 01:27:21ID: 20099361

My appoligies it was Andy Alder, but you did say should see 8GB without /PAE switch this is incorrect.

by: andyalderPosted on 2007-10-18 at 01:51:09ID: 20099457

According to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875352 /PAE is no longer needed as long as no-execute memory protection is turned on. That's why I pointed out the BIOS settings which by default are off on Proliants.

by: Network_Data_SupportPosted on 2007-10-18 at 02:59:20ID: 20099620

i have never had to add anything to the boot.ini  with enterprise to see the extra ram

by: markbenhamPosted on 2007-10-18 at 03:07:00ID: 20099642

This must be a HP/Proliant - Windows issue I would think.
