I'm getting the "Hardware Malfunction" Blue Screen on Windows XP SP2. It comes up after the login screen. If I login quickly I can even get my personal desktop up before the crash but it will crash after a few seconds if the login screen is just sitting there as well.. I'm trying to track down what is causiing it. There is no further message on the Blue Screen and there is no event related to the crash.
I had purchased this pc custom built from Computer Sonics in 11/07. At that time I had 2gb of RAM Kingston HyperX DDR2. 1 month later I had purchased 2 more gigs of RAM as Kingston Hyper X but different model and has installed it myself.
About a month ago I was started receiving random black screen on my Vista machine. troubleshooted and noticed that it was not the cable, nor monitor but the video card. thus had reseated the video card and received video signal again. Then again I received the same issue with random black screen, either while working on a document or watching a movie. The second time it happened I installed the latest Nvidia 8800GT drivers for my video card and rebooted the machine that helped. But when it happned the third time with the black screen I took it into Computer SOnics shop nearby and had them look into th problem for me since i had paid for warranty. well after a week of diagnostics of which they updated teh BIOS and may have tried other video card drivers, Computer Sonics stated that the black screen is a known issue and that its common with Vista everyone is getting it. But then they stated that they started receiving bluescreens with error messages stated that its my Logitech setpoitn driver that needs to be removed. THey removed that and same thing. However now after a week they started to tell me that my warranty is VIODED because a month later in 12/07 I had installed my own 2 gb stick of RAM and that voids the warranty. I was calm and didnt know what to do, they stated they would not charge for any labor that they have done so far, but in the future if they look into it there will be a charge but once I received it back from them at the shop , there was that BLUESCREEN: Hardware Malfunction; COntact system vendor. System halt. and no other info. all they did to troubleshoot was to take it into safe mode and stated "hey if you can get into safemode then it is your OS or driver issue its not a hardware issue."
and stated to reinstall the OS.
Later that day I had reformatted the drive and installed XP instead of vista. I then first installed the latest chipset from ASUS, then sound max drivers, USB fail for ASUS, then latest Nvidia 8800 Gt drivers for the video card. then after doing all the necessary windows updates I had installed MS office 2007, then winrar. done system restore point. then installed Logitech mouse software. then AVG 7.5 spyware and threatfire. then Boom. I received the same BLUESCREEN Hardware malfunction that I received at the computer Sonics shop. I then opened my PC sprayed all the dust made sure everything is intact and no loose wires, made sure all the fans are fine. then rebooted pc. then after 5 mins bluescreen again.
Then I removed all my RAM sticks. put in 1 gb first then booted my machine it was fine. then I installed the second RAM stick and then booted my screen and after 2 mins BLUEscreen. I then removed the second stick and left only 1 gb stick on their initially. and still I am not stuck with BLUEscreen Hardware malfunction; System halt.
