The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Changed RAM and now computer will not boot

I am really stumped on this one. I have been pulling apart and rebuilding machines for years and never had this problem.

Here is the scenario:

1. Dell Desktop Dimension 4500 with 256 factory installed RAM (double sided)
2. Purchase 2x 512mb chips from reputable dealer that specifies correct RAM for this machine (single sided)
3. Take out old RAM install new RAM
4. Start it up......
5. Get 3 Beeps
6. LED lights show GYYY
7. HD Spins up
8. Green power light on MB on
9. Fans on PSU and CPU working ok
10. Turn off and take out one memory chip - same results as points 5 - 9 above
11. Turn off and take out other memory chip and replace with original memory - same results as points 5 - 9 above
12. Turn off. Reset CMOS jumper to reset BIOS (move to pins 2/3)
13. Turn on - same results as points 5 - 9 above
14. Turn off. Take battery out for 5 minutes with jumper still in pins 2/3
15. Turn on - same results as points 5 - 9 above
16. Turn off - Still with battery out for 5 minutes with jumper still in pins 1/2
17. Turn on - same results as points 5 - 9 above
18. Perform all of points 12-17 above with battery in
19. Have checked and rechecked all cable seatings even though not been touched.
20. Monitor is recognised at turn on but only as a "handshake"
21. Hard Drive has been taken out and checked on a seperate machine as working.
22. Beep codes and LED lights are standard message indicators for this machine that there is a memory problem.

So in saying all of this has anybody got any suggestions on how to overcome such a frustrating problem where a simple RAM change has turned into a marathon?

Many thanks.Start Free Trial
