Question

Memory upgrade for Gateway NV58 with Vista 64 bit

Asked by: dsterling

I have a new Gateway NV58 laptop that came with 4 gb of ram, I have added a 4 gb chip replacing one of the 2 gb chips making the total ram 6 gb, the bios sees it and it shows up in Vista, the problem is that the computer blue screen's at random (some times it takes a few hours or  20 minutes), I have restored it back to the factory config 3 times and it's still blue screening. I've taken out the 4 gb chip and I'm using the orginal two 2gb chips (4gb RAM now) that it came with and its seems to be running fine (at least for the past few hours). I'm wondering if there is a memory mismatch that is causing the problem? Does anyone have a solution?

I have not been able to get a response from Gateway on this.

Thank you,

From Crucial.com......

Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-6400,DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 2GB per slot.*

*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.

So would seem that 4Gig is all that Gateway support on that model

Yes, a lot of times memory mismatches (in both size or brand) could cause bluescreens. Another possibility is that the 4GB ram module you purchased could be bad. If you download a program called memtest86+ you can burn it to a cd and boot to it, then let the program run for a few hours to determine if your ram is bad. Otherwise I would suggest sticking with the 2x2GB configuration or upgrading the second ram module so you will be running a 2x4GB configuration.

Neilsr: Where did you get your informaiton about the memory limitations of the computer, I was informed that the memory is upgradable to 8 gb and that is what I planed on prior to buying the computer.

dsterling,

Neilsr is right! According to Crucial this model, the Gateway NV58 maxes out at 4GB. See the screenshot attached.

The fact that 2x4Gb SODIMMS may fit in and be seen by the BIOS does not mean that they will work. According to Crucial, Gateway do not support more than a  4 GB configuration for that series of laptops, sorry to say.

Generaly, If crucial say it is so, it is so! ;)

Lastly .... I did notice a discrepancy in Kingston (they offer 4GB memory stick for your model which could lead you to buy 2 - one for each slot) so I double-checked with Gateway and they confirm that the max is 4GB:
