Small typo:
dd if=infile ibs=32k obs=4k | gzip | dd ibs=4k obs=32k of=outfile.gz
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI seem to recall that when I ran "gzip" or "compress" on Solaris 10, the
Page Out value in "vmstat 2" would surge to above 12000.
However, on Windows, "Winzip" or gzip triggers high CPU without much
of paging activity as I don't see changes in "Physical Memory" & "Kernel
Memory" changes under Performance tab in Task Manager.
Q1:
Anyone know of any application that could trigger high paging in Windows?
Any media or backup server that show this behavior?
Q2:
What about in Unix, any application (besides the gzip / compress) that would
trigger high paging : I just wanted to explain to management that certain
application can cause high memory paging & yet this high paging activity is
considered normal

A2 gzip or bzip2 uses normal file read which is younger than processes in RAM so they get paged out.
If you wrap gzip with dd (dd if=infile ibs=32k obs=4k | gzip | dd ibs=4k obs=32 of=outfile.gz) it behaves a lot better.
A1 - huge excel sheet does fine
