windows media install, no ie or network connections

We just ordered the parts for a new computer from newegg. After piecing it together and installing windows media center, all drivers, sp2... we noticed that it does not have internet explorer and there are no network connections. I tried to add one but it did nothing. The mobo is a k9n neo with nforce 550 drivers. The only device defined in the device manager under network adaptors is "NVIDIA NForce Network Controller" which is "working properly". When plugged into the router the LAN light is on. We need help getting this thing online!!! Thanks.

Did you load the chipset and other motherboard drivers?

We plugged everything in, booted up the win CD, installed, then updated all the drivers using the CD's provided for all the 'unknown devices'. We also downloaded the nvidia drivers here http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_detail.php?UID=733&kind=1

Are the chipset drivers installed from windows or is that a bios thing? We may need help with that.
Chipset drivers should be on the MotherBoard CD . .

Right clikck on an open spot on the desktop . . select Properties . . then Desktop . . click the Customize Desktop button at the bottom and put a check in Internet Explorer to be shown on desktop. . Apply and OK out to see if it is there.

Have you run the set up a network wizard in Network Connedtions?
The icon appears, but when we click on it,  a window appears asking "Choose a program you want to use to open this file"

I did run the network connection wizard but it did not add a network connection. That window is still empty.
Did the installation complete without errors ?  What happens if you press the Windows key and E ?
Yes, actually we reinstalled windows for the second time already just to be sure.

[Win key] + E brings up My Computer window
That's what it should do . . try this . . click on Start . . Run . . type iexplore.exe and see what happens
Tried iexplore.exe and iexplorer.exe, both said cannot find file
Well . . try this . . go here and download & install IE7 . .

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/default.mspx
Or here if the pc you are on already has IE7

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/ie7.html
Could not install because it could not validate windows (ie connect to the internet).

- no network connection
- no IE

The Ethernet is onboard, and IE should always come with windows, right?
. . "IE should always come with windows, right?" . .

Right . .

You have an MSI Board? . .
Yes, MSI K9N Neo

Another thing:
When it boots, it gives the message:

CLIENT MAC ADDR: [MAC ADDR] GUID: [some horrible nujmber]
DHCP.........\

It just sits here for about 3 min until continuing.

Try this . . in the Run bo0x, type cmd . . then sfc /scannow . . it may want to restart, and ask for the cd and could take a while to complete
. . "CLIENT MAC ADDR: [MAC ADDR] GUID: [some horrible nujmber]
DHCP.........\

It just sits here for about 3 min until continuing" . . .

Sounds like it is looking for a network connection
Then it says "No boot filename received"
We ran the /sfc scannow but it keeps asking us for disks we dont have "XP Pro 2"...we have Media Center, which I know is XP, but apparently there are differences.
Only other thing I can think of is a Repair Install . . This is a good guide to performing a repair install

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
One more message during boot:
"The processor(s) installed in your system are of an unknown revision. Please contact you BIOS vendor for appropriate updates."

Perhaps updating the BIOS?
would not hurt . . but that should not interfere with IE being installed . . and there were no errors during the install?
I can't find the bios on the website.

I think this is a lost cause. Something is terribly flawed with this system

Well we sent it back and got another MB in the mail. Plugged everything back and still getting the same problem. I tried refreshing the services window and noticed the message mentioned the "Network Connections" services. Looking at the services I notcied about 75% of the services set as 'automatic' are NOT running..wth? So I started Network Connections service and boom, the network connection appeared! However, its not connecting. So I turned on all the other 'automatic' services, still no luck...the network connection seemed locked. I rebooted, it wouldn't shut down....cold booted, and the services still wont start automatically.

The only device we can't find drivers for is a PCI device, I have no idea what it is....how can I find this out? Why wont the services start? Are they related?
You loaded the drivers for the Network Adaptor? . .
Yes I've installed them a few times. There is as device under network adaptors that is 'working properly'. But when I start the 'Network Connections' service the little icon in the lower left shows but never manages to acquire an ip address. I'm thinking some dependant services are not being started.
What are you connected to? . . a Router? . . Modem?
Router, using DHCP. TCP/IP is configured for DHCP for the network adaptor.
Serices to check:

DHCP Client
TCP/IP NetBios Helper
Workstation
I booted up and had to manually start those. But dispite being plugged in (lights on router and port are on) it still says Network cable unplugged. What other services are missing?
Try a different network cable?
Yes I used the one I was using for the computer and same thing...unplugged. Looking in the event viewer I'm getting this warning (among other warnings/errors that are due to lack of connection):

DHCP: Your computer has automatically configuerd the IP address for the Network Card with network address ..... The IP address being used is 169.254.98.8
