XP Workgroup "server" pc that has a few shares on it - freezes up to the point where you can type faster than the PC can display
Ive tried a few things and Im looking for more ideas.
Im not present when this happens and users are non tech and unhelpful, just moan saying ........ its freezing sometimes.
What factors can affect this?
All have fixed IPs
All are listed in host file
How do I check transfer speeds between pcs?
Could it be a bad network card on the "server"
Anyone got possible causes?
Is there a possibilty its the motherboard / processor and I just need to replace it? Whats the chances?
How many pc's on the network ..?Check the router/switch ports and cat5 cable using UTP tester and chcek any IP and computer name conflicts on the network.
And please give the eveent viwer detials.

Hi,
Server PC - 2 gig ram p4.
Two laptops > wireless
Router > Linksys N series.
Main use is excel documents and word access.
Event viewer > will look when next on site.
saying ........ its freezing sometimes........
Does not mean network causing the problem. It could be network or hardware, it could be Office application, it could be windows OS....
To troubleshoot this, you need to be more specific on the following:
1. what application get normally get it frozen.
2. what size of the file
3. what hardware spec of the client PC (CPU, Mem)
To do the analysis, you can check Task Manager of client PC to see how big memory and CPU is and what is the availability memory and CPU. Also, check event viewer as the previous posts suggest. Most of the time, problem is on client resources.

Excel docs are all less than a meg. Huge files were an issue before, but I explained that to them and they now reduce image sizes.
What does a latency check do? I have heard of ethereal - will look for wireshark.

Ive now gathered a checklist of things to do when I go on site tomorrow. Will post any reaults.
dr_shivan: wireshark doesnt have an option for latency check (think its on its wish list) Ive a lot to learn with wire shark!
But found this .......
This is a cool free ap - ping multiple nodes at the same time

Possible cause ?
When a user searches "my comnputer" on their computer for example, does that also search shares on mapped drives
(on the server pc)?
