The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

SATA HDD is EXTREMELY Slow (v.2)

This is a continuation of a problem I had discussed at length here: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Components/Motherboards/Q_22752049.html

Sorry to open a new topic but the old topic seems to have been locked but the issue is unresolved.

Pickup up where I left off:

I have the following:

Shuttle AB06R v2.0 Motherboard
1 SATA 320gb Seagate HDD
1 SATA 200gb Seagate HDD
Promise SATA300 TX4 SATA Controller Card
Onboard Silicon Image SiI 3112 SATARaid Controller

I continued to have issues following the directions in the above post.  The Promise card was a real pain to get working (I still can't get into a BIOS because it doesn't appear to have one flashed on the card to begin with.  I don't have a floppy drive and that appears to be the only way to flash).  However, it is working at the moment.

So here's what I did:

1.) I was having problems to get the Promise card to recognize both drive, it was only recognizing the 300gb drive.  I Combined the two SATA drives onto the old Onboard RAID controller, set up a striped set, intialized and formatted in Windows.  I left this on overnight.  (This is still connected to the onboard controller).

2.) The following morning I tested transferring a 700mb file to the RAID set and it actually froze my computer up for a few seconds (worse than my intial problem).  After a few minutes a bubble popped up in my system tray that said: "Windows - Delayed Write Failed."

3.) Powered down my computer and hooked the two SATA drives up to the Promise controller card.  Then booted up.  When I booted the Disk Management utility did not recognize the striped set but rather recognized the 300gb drive and then it listed:  "Disk 5 Foreign".

4.) When I did power down my system, the disk listed as foreign was cold while the second drive in the striped set was hot (this is obviously a good indicator of drive failure).  It did come back on when I booted, but Windows XP tried to initialize it again, separately, no longer recognizing it as part of the striped set.

And this is where I'm at.  At this point it looks like the larger drive may just be a dud but I'm not sure. In my intial post ( here: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Components/Motherboards/Q_22752049.html ) I said that the drive seemed to work okay.  I could always transfer files to it, it was just very, very slow.

Ideally I would like to not set up a striped set.  I want each drive to function interchangably as a single drive so I can swap and replace with as much ease as possible.

Any ideas would be highly appreciated.  Sorry about the length of this post.  :)Start Free Trial
