Question

Power failure - motherboard replacement necessary?

Asked by: rutlandict

Client has asked for a quote on resolving problem of power failure on this model of laptop. PSU is not at fault - eliminated.
He does not simply wish to dump the laptop and buy new (data to save; apps installed; the concept of waste) although the quote will determine this.

1. Can the individual component on the motherboard be replaced or must it be the whole motherboard. Could either be fitted by our standard PC repair workshop (never replaced a whole laptop mbd before but willing to try!).
2. Can any Expert recommend a UK supplier of spare hardware components for this laptop model?

thanks

If it is the mainboard, you have to replace it as a whole. If your doing this the first time I don't recommend doing it yourself. Replacing Laptop parts requires experience, as it is very easy to damage other parts.

You might try replace the AC adapter, new battery, or down to component level to change AC socket on motherboard as power issue related. As Rindi said above, if it is mobo, then you will have replace whole motherboard.

If you have to replace the motherboard, note that laptop motherboards cost more than desktop motherboards - I replaced a Toshiba Tecra M4 motherboard that cost $450, and the only reason I did it was because it was a nice tablet PC, it cost me nothing, and I was pretty sure it was the motherboard.  If you are very methodical about taking out screws and disconnecting cables (taking pictures as you go is a good idea), it can be done.  A service company had quoted a price of over a thousand dollars to fix it, so it was worth it.

thanks so far  - UK supplier for the motherboard - Dell spares??
That would give us an idea of cost.

We have replaced hard drive, keyboards, ram etc & cleaned up CPUs in laptops before and taken many screws out (and put them back) in the process!

However we have a laptop repair company to fall back on who can quote (no obligation)  so may see what they say first.
will keep you informed.

The power inverter on the motherboard are a usual suspect when the power on a laptop will not come on. It is usually built on to the motherboard of laptop.

Dell actually provides a step-by-step instruction on how to remove and replace every part on a laptop. However, to gain 'direct' access to those instructions you have to a be a dell certified tech.

It's not that hard to replace - it just very time consuming and you need to be methodical. I actaully place containers over a sheet of paper and label on the paper what each grouping of screws are. On new series I take a camera and take pictures of each major step.
