Dell BIOS screen takes 20 minutes to appear when starting computer

Dell desktop has 256 MB of DDR RAM.  It uses Windows XP. Computer had many viruses and has been cleaned.  Once Window starts booting, computers works very well.  It takes a very long time to even get to the Dell start up screen.  It takes a very long time after selecting bios setup to get to the CMOS setup.  Otherwise it runs fine.    I cannot figure out what the problem is.
