Installing motherboard in a new case
I have just bought a brand new case with all screws and fittings included. I put my psu motherboard everything in the case but when I turn on the power the cpu and psu fan twitch and the keyboard led blinks but that's the only sign of life. I heard from someone that I should have put "stand offs" underneath the motherboard so I would leave a gap between motherboard and the back of the case. After I heard this I put the stand offs in correctly and then mounted the motherboard on those.
However I still have a problem. Although the computer does actually power up now, I am stuck on the screen that shows my graphics card model and video ram... nothing else happens.

when you FIRST switched it on - before the standoffs - was the motherboard sitting on the metal of the case?

either you shorted out something on the motherboard - aka screwed it, or something is loose - probably CPU or RAM
Have you installed any hard drives yet?
What messages are showing on the screen?

Depending on the hardware that you have, it may be a good idea to remove/unplug as many add-ons (graphics cards, sound card, NIC, hard discs, optical drives, etc.) and try to boot with as basic a system as possible. If you can get the machine going with just the motherboard, CPU and RAM, then you at least have a point to start working from.

Do you have a dedicated video card, or an onboard video card, or both? If it is a dedicated video card, remove it and re-seat it.
It may also be a good idea to reseat your RAM and possibly your CPU.
Do you have any other cards (modem, NIC, sound, etc.) installed? Try to remove and re-seat them as well.

it can also be a good idea trying the mobo outside the case - put it on a NON conductive surface (NOT the plastic bag the mobo came in..) eg wood

i suggest testing with the minimum setup - disconnect also all peripherals and network cables :
motherboard + cpu + 1 ram stick, video card, power supply
on boot, do you have a display?
if NO it is one of the connected, swap ram, Power supply, video card - leaving only motherboard and cpu
if Yes, add devices till the problem shows
you can also check the motherboard for bad capacitors as shown here : www.badcaps.net

Does it get to the screen where it shows you your motherboard model, CPU, RAM, etc?
If it doesn't get to that point, your MB may be busted, shorted out, due to turning it on on a conductive surface. With any luck you'll be able to use the CPU, RAM and any add-in cards - though there's no guarantee those haven't been damaged as well.

i have also seen this often if the floppy drive cable is not on the drive correctly, or the floppy drive power isnt on the drive correctly.
