Question

Im searching for boot disk

Asked by: mariowinkler

Hello Hardware Expert,

ive bought a quadcore pc from Medion(Belgium) but i hated the vista, so
i asked to put xp on it.
And so they did, and it worked fine for a long time unitl i got a virus.
So now, im trying to reinstall the xp system.

Now when i boot from the xp cdrom it all goes well until i get to
the part where i need to choose my harddisk, just before that screen,
i get the blue screen telling me somethings wrong.
Except for the virus, there was nothing wrong with my system,
and when i try to install VISTA(original operating system) it all goes well. So i don't think i
got any fysical damage, but i need some kinda scsi driver disk,
which i can install pressing f6 during install xp.
The problem i can not find that driver.
THis is Medion pc and has serial number : 1428901
If you go to www.medion.com  you can find the files
for the motherboard and also for xp, but i don't find any boot disks.

On the motherboard itself i find MSI and also MS 7501 ver2.0
It is Ami BIos.
You're help is very appreciated.

Kind regards
Steven Vervliet

First enter the Bios on your pc, think its by pressing f2 or delete on most pc`s.
Then go to Drive configuration  ( or advanced bios setup) and check if you can change the drive mode from raid to ide. otherwise try this:

Download a program called nlite this allows you to create a cd with the raid/sata drivers on the cd.
google for driverpacks and then download a sata driverpack.
Use nlite to integrate the driverpack onto your xp cd.
Create an ISO image when youre done, then burn it to a cd.

Hope This helps

Bear with me here, did you check that, raid/ide setting in the bios i mentioned earlier?

by: mariowinklerPosted on 2008-11-27 at 09:11:19ID: 23051167

Dear Raidn69,

No. But i did now. And now i receive a blue screen telling me. WINDOWS xp Setup. GREAT!
Well i did not check it cause i thougt if xp was running and nothing in the bios was changed,
it could not be the bios. and secondly i didn't believe my problem was so simple.
As you see, never be too shure about anything.
You had it right from the first time. You must be a great expert.

Thank you very much, and i wish you a nice day, just like mine now.

Kind regards
Mario

I wouldn't recommend switching drive mode to IDE. It is possible that you will lose NCQ support on your hard drive, which will result in decreased performance.

The right approach to this problem lies through finding out what is the motherboard in the computer; once this becomes known, find out what is the integrated RAID controller; once this is known, downloading the driver from vendor's site and adding it via F6 during setup. For example, if this is Intel ICH chipset, which is most likely, then the driver is available at this page:
http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/

From what you mentioned about MS 7501, it looks like this motherboard:
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K9A2VM-FD&class=mb

but it's for AMD processor.

If your controller is indeed Intel, see this page:
http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imst/sb/CS-015988.htm
for recommendations on the hard drive controller mode. Note the last paragraph. It also explains why you were getting stop 7b.

Hello Vadimrapp1

Thanks for you're proffesional advice. I have read it very carefully.
And im shure you got a strong point there.
In the meantime i installed allready the xp and all software on it, i don't want
to do this over again. For now. If i get any decreased performance, ill shure come
back to you're comment.
Right now xp works like a ROCKET. Windows are opening faster then i can click.
THis is Quad-Core en 4 Gig ram. Should be strong enough to pull xp.
When i copy stuff from one map to another, it seems to go fast. For now anyway.

Kind regards
Mario

> If i get any decreased performance, ill shure come back to you're comment.

You may want to check the settings on your controller in device manager. If it's indeed Intel, download the driver from http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2101 , then its setting will tell if everything is enabled. The drive itself must support these features as well.

One example of NCQ enabled can be seen here:
http://www.bjorn3d.com/read.php?cID=734&pageID=1211
as you can see, for some operations it's insignificant, but for others it's about twice.

But you won't know what you are missing if you don't have anything to compare.
