Question

Dell Poweredge 2600 won't POST with second cpu

Asked by: melevy

I have a Dell Poweredge 2600 with one 2.6GHz Zeon CPU. I'm trying to add a second CPU. However, after adding the CPU & VRM, the box won't start POST. The new CPU is the same stepping as the existing. I know that the new CPU is good, as I removed the existing and installed the new one and POST started. I've also tried swapping the VRMs, both work. Basically, any combination of CPU & VRM work as long as only one CPU is in place. I tried resetting the BIOS and it is the latest version from Dell's website.

Any clues? Much appreciated.

Check to make sure all the power supply connectors on the board are filled - there may be another +12V connector near the second CPU.

In addition, it is possible that your power supply cannot handle the added load of the two processors - what are its specs?

The new CPU must be the exact same speed as the first, also the VRM's MUST match (The system does not support mismatched VRMs) also If you received two VRMs with the upgrade kit, replace the primary VRM already installed in the system with one of the VRMs from the upgrade kit.

ConSolIT, that might be it. The CPUs are the same speed & stepping, but the VRMs are visibly different. I'll get a matched pair and try again.

WB, there are no empty connectors and this box has dual-redundant PSs. I seriously doubt the PS has anything to do with it. Dell does not offer any larger capacity PS for this box, they're the same regardless of the number of CPUs it's shipped with.

You are correct - as long as everything is connected there should be no problem on the PSU end.

I ordered a matched pair of VRMs. I'll update this question as soon as I receive them and can schedule downtime to try again. Shouldn't be more than a week.

After hassling with the vendor I finally have a matched set of VRMs in hand and I have downtime scheduled this weekend... Resolution hopefully next week.

OK, finally got two matched VRMs and CPUs and all is well with the world, or at least my small part of it, for the time being.  Thanks to all!
