The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Am I getting the most from my new memory?

Asked by korz in Computer Motherboards, Hardware Components, Computer Memory (RAM)

I've got an Asus P4P800-E Deluxe motherboard, P4 2.54GHz cpu, and just changed

from 2 x 512M of Mushkin HP2100 (high-performance PC2100) cas 2-2-2 memory

to 2 x 1G of OCZ PC3200 cas 2-3-2-5 memory.

1. When I go into my BIOS, it says that my FSB=533MHz.  Memtest86+ says FSB=133MHz.
Which is right?

2. Even though my RAM is PC3200 (DDR400), memtest86+ says RAM: 167MHz (DDR334).
Does this mean that my memory is running at a slower rate than it can?

As I've read about it, the FSB runs at the clock rate.  The clock multiplier (or bus/core ratio) is multiplied times the FSB and that's the speed at which the CPU runs.  In my case, if I believe the AI Booster utility that came with my mobo (see attached .doc file), is 133.64 x 19, which results in the 2.539GHz that the CPU is running at.  That part I understand.

The memory, typically runs at the FSB, but because I have DDR memory, the effective rate of the memory is twice that, right?  But then Ai Booster says FSB is 534.55, although that doesn't match up with what my memory is rated at or the DDR334 that memtest86+ says I'm running at.

3. Am I getting the most from my memory given my mobo, cpu, and memory?

4. Shouldn't I be able to run my memory at DDR400?

5. Will I compromise my system stability if I mess with these clock rates and multipliers?

6. If I happen to have an additional 2 x 512M of PC3200 memory with a CAS 2-3-3-6, would I be slowing down my system by adding them to my motherboard, which currently has 2 x 1G of PC3200 CAS 2-3-2-5?
