Why do external drives always die on me?

I've bought and returned several external drives. (All Seagate Terabyte drives) and every external drive I've bought ends up dying on me. I'm thinking there's some problem with grounding on my computer. I have a custom built computer with an ASUS P5Q3 Deluxe motherboard.
