Did I blow my UART?

I recently hooked up a Smart-UPS to one of my servers using an APC-supplied black serial cable. Loaded the console and I can manage the device fine and configure my server with it. I hooked up a second UPS to a second server (both 2U rack-jobs) and the moment I plugged in the cable there was an audible pop and the Windows 2003 server it was attached to instantly turned off. I disconnected the cable and powered the server back on and other than asking me about the unexpected power event, everything came back up and worked fine. Is it possible that I had two different pinouts? The hardware manager says COM1: is working properly, but I'm scared to try another cable to find out. Is the pinout for UPS and RS-232 identical?Start Free Trial
