Question

Extended life laptop batteries /portable charging station

Asked by: rookie_b

Hello,

We have about 100 users that need to use their personal laptops for extended periods of time - 2 x 3hr session 1hr apart is the worst case scenario. We have asked them to bring 2nd/extended life batteries but we are expecting many of them may fail to do that for one reason or another. We only have 8 power sockets in the room and we are not allowed to use laptop charging cabinets or power strips. I know there are some universal portable chargers/batteries but not sure what would work or where to look for. Any ideas on a good portable powering solution for laptop(s) that would last 6 hrs. Also, users will need to access wireless internet, so this would put extra burden on the batteries.

Thank you!

you should be looking to buy large quantities of this product
12 volt power plant.
http://www.fuelcellstore.com/en/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=56&idproduct=1305#details

look in this thread for a complete discussion on the same topic.
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Laptops_Notebooks/Q_24655626.html

i need to know whether all your laptops are the same model.
and what is output voltage and current of the laptop power supply(ies)

cheers!

Thanks for the quick response. This looks good, but the other thread mentions 2 or 3 of these per laptop. Unfortunately there is no way to tell what laptop users will be bringing, but what about a Dell D630 with a 6 cell battery? How many of these would it take to keep it running for 6 hrs?

by: hatheharikenPosted on 2009-08-28 at 06:23:04ID: 25207330

many.

generally, each of these powerpacks give around 3 hours power to a laptop (depends on the power requirement of the laptop)

what is your budget?

if you dont have control over the laptop models, then supplying low voltage is out.
you need to supply main line voltage (110 or 220),
how about a deisel generator (cheap) or a UPS (expensive)

Voltage is 220. Diesel is out. They need to be quiet. If we have to spend the extra money we shall. Thank you!

then a large UPS is what you are looking for.
even an inverter will work.

you will be wanting a 220 volt, 65 to 80 ampere inverter
nominal load should be maintained at 60-70% max.
http://www.provantage.com/tripp-lite-apsint2424~7TRP907Q.htm - will power around 20 laptops
http://www.110220volts.com/Pw-2300-12.html - will power around 25 laptops
http://cgi.ebay.com/1600W-Pure-Sine-Wave-Inverter-%2F-50Amp-Charger---24V-_W0QQitemZ400069287304QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090825?IMSfp=TL090825158006r33056 - will power around 15 laptops

for this you will require deep cycle batteries (many).
if you require i will calculate and tell you how many batteries you will require.

http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=207660539&listingid=21791534

for inverters, instead of "one big" inverter you can also have "many small" inverters
http://www.powerbright.com/ML900-24.html
each of these will power at least 6 laptops.
of course they can share the same battery array (easy to recharge), or each can have its own battery cache (pain to recharge)

hathehariken.

ps. there are ultra quiet DG sets available out there. you cant hear them operating from 10 metres away.

You're going to run 100 users from 8 electrical outlets, and no power strips are allowed?  Is the person in charge of this operation thinking of the ramifications clearly?

If the building is incapable of providing the power, get an external power generator and run it through a line conditioner, and from there, supply power to the users.  I think upgrading the power in the location is the right way to solve this, and anything else is going to be a makeshift solution.

by: hatheharikenPosted on 2009-08-28 at 07:24:02ID: 25207958

i think the best solution will be a diesel generator sitting outside the building, and running cables from the DG to the users
cheaper, less hassles, and nearly failsafe.
