Microphone stopped working on new machine?

My microphone has stopped working in Windows XP SP2 (at a unknown time as i have not tried to use it) on my new machine. The microphone works perfectly as i have tried it on another machine and it works fine.

Windows is not picking anything up when i speak, however when i broadcast via Ventrilo (voice software) it picks up static like noise.

I have uninstalled/reinstalled the soundcard and have changed the port that the microphone uses (front pannel slot, and have ticked use front pannnel mic also) and neither has any affect. The microphone is not muted and is set as the default device.

This is really frustrating me now as i can't see any reason for it not to work! i'm convinced its software interfering as the SoundMax software has in the past stopped my speakers from working (when you plug it in it comes up with auto detect, if you choose wrong option it won't work)

I have windows xp on a P5N32-E SLi nForce 680i SLI chipset, with the latest 9.53 drivers. I have not tried to update the SoundMax drivers as i can't find a link for them anywhere and it WAS working fine with the current computer, so guessing unrelated to drivers?

Thanks

Pretty urgent on this one as i intend to use it alot!

edit: tried to download new soundmax drivers from http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P5N32-E%20SLI

what i think are the correct drivers give the error message of not being supported by my OS?

Windows XP service pack 2...

confused now :)
try checking the soud option in control panel and make sure that the sound card is choosen as the default output device. and tell me more about your computer is it a built in sound or a sound card, have you ever used a mic on this machine before and what have you done exactly "and have changed the port that the microphone uses " and what happens when you directly plug your mic in the sound card (not using the front slots) does it work. At the end if you have an available sound card try changing the sound card and see if the problem lies in your sound card or in your system

did it work before?  then you can try a system restore.
if it did not work, check all the connections for audio, and mike to your mobo
Dr-4N: the correct sound card is chosen, the sound card came with the motherboard a P5N32-E SLi it is a seperate card from the motherboard however. I have used a mic on this machine before and it worked fine, i have no changed anything that i am aware of since, it doesn't work in either front or rear slots. No available sound card  to try :(
>>   No available sound card  to try :(  <<    that would be the good test !  can you borrow one from a friend ?
ok i have found a sound card in a old old pc, plugged it in autodetected by windows & installed, sound (speakers) work fine...same problem again with mic, nothing is being recorded whatsoever, its like theres a invisible mute on it?

So its something to do with windows/pc? rather than the soundcard?
you disabled the onboard one?
for the software, here the things to try :
-update the drivers (chipset, sound)
-repair OS by running sfc /scannow from the run box, or a repair install : http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
There is no onboard soundcard, it came with PC but it is a seperate sound card. Which has its speical slot on PC.

I have newest chipset drivers already, and the sound drivers the newest i can find are the ones that came with the PC which did INITIALLY work....arg!!

I know you tried this before but kindly try another mic and see if it will work or not
i don't have another mic, but the mic works in another pc

Ok, didn't try another mic but found out what the problem is, there is a loose connection in the mic so when i tried it on the other machine it worked (obvisouly wire was in right place) then stopped...after accidently moving the jack discovered that the input came back. So looks like i'm doing a return for the mic!

Thank you both for your help will award points
