Question

What type of Hard Drive connection is this

Asked by: skbryan

Have an MPC Transport2300 laptop, not sure what kind of hard drive connection it is using, looks like it will be an IDE to whatever this input is.  Any ideas on what type of connection it is? Thank You.

There should be a converter cable or bracket that goes from the HD to the port on the laptop.

Is it still attacjed to your old HD ?

by: skbryanPosted on 2009-01-13 at 12:46:40ID: 23367103

There is no converter cable or bracket, i would like to know which type of converter or bracket i would need. Thanks

That model takes IDE drives, but you will need the drive enclosure for it. You may be able to find one on e-bay.

There Website is half down. I would give their Tech Support a call at 877-485-1464

by: Mike_CarrollPosted on 2009-01-13 at 12:59:51ID: 23367229

I might be wrong on this but it really looks to me like it is some sort of proprietary port replicator that is specific to MPC - I've never seen one like it before and my bet is that you'll need to talk to MPC on it.

by: skbryanPosted on 2009-01-13 at 13:06:43ID: 23367282

Unfortunately, MPC just recently declared bankruptcy, so tech support isn't possible.  It looks like an ordinary drive bay, maybe a little higher, and of course, the input near the top.  I dunno.  Was trying to find more info about it, but haven't come up with much.  9.5mmH 2.5" HDD, the HD in the spec sheet was listed as Hitachi 2.5" 60GB 7200RPM Hard Drive.  Thanks.

I believe it is a PATA. It is a new small connector commonly found on newer, small laptops.

by: skbryanPosted on 2009-01-13 at 13:11:27ID: 23367317

Hmmmm, that could be it, I recall seeing "pata" somewhere in my search for a solution.  Now, to find a replacement hard drive and cable.

by: rbarnhardtPosted on 2009-01-13 at 13:46:48ID: 23367631

This looks like it is a Dell from looking at the pictures you uploaded. As new as PATA is, the drive is probably under warranty isn't it?

by: Noam_KuilboerPosted on 2009-01-13 at 13:49:26ID: 23367674

Even though they filled for Chap. 11 they should still have tech support.

I would give them a call and ask. I dont know if I would buy from them though

by: rbarnhardtPosted on 2009-01-13 at 16:20:15ID: 23368872

Do you mean Dell filed for Chapter 11?? We are a huge Dell buyer, and I just checked the web, there is no news posting anywhere of Dell filing chapter 11!! Not even on sites like MSN Money.

Here is a company that deals in parts for the MPC line , they may have omething.

rbarnhardt. No not Dell but MPC

by: skbryanPosted on 2009-01-14 at 06:13:52ID: 23372742

No luck with MPC suport.  They used to have the best support ever, just don't know why they went and bought Gateways business line - it all went down from there.

Anyway, I'm not having any luck.  There is just a bay with no pin connects in the bay.  Looks like the drive would sit in the bay and attach by a ribbon connect on top.  I can't even find a drive that looks like it would fit.  If more photos would help, let me know.  Thanks!

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2009-01-14 at 06:32:34ID: 23372933

This looks to be the type. Found it on this page for a Sony
http://www.fonerbooks.com/laptop_9.htm

by: skbryanPosted on 2009-01-14 at 06:35:04ID: 23372961

So are you think that the drive does have the normal pins, but then has some sort of adapter that  fits on it with a ribbon cable that connects to the connection just outside of the bay?  What might that converter be called, I wonder and where the hack do I get one, and what is its purpose?  Good detective work, just going to read the details now.  Thanks!

Do you have a hard drive caddy with this model, perhaps it has the connector integrated in it?

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2009-01-14 at 06:59:14ID: 23373236

If not integrated into the caddy then this would probably go under the name of a "Hard drive flex cable"
Usually made from mylex similar to this one from a Dell

I came across the proper name for this cable.
FPC(Flex-rigid Printed Circuit) cable.

by: skbryanPosted on 2009-01-15 at 14:36:01ID: 23388621

I am finding more and more of the cables, and I may end of buying several just to fine one that fits.  Thanks for everyone's help.  Still working on finding the correct part.  Thank you sparkmaker for furnishing the correct name.

Thank you for all your suggestions.  I am still plugging away on this issue.

by: skbryanPosted on 2009-02-18 at 08:42:18ID: 23672012

Still looking for the part.  I do have a part number, but can't find it anywhere.  The part number is:

Platy HDD FPC
PN 08-20Z16031BSE
Career 27/0505

Very frustrating. . .

by: skbryanPosted on 2009-03-11 at 05:28:31ID: 23856265

Still looking for the part. . .

by: skbryanPosted on 2009-04-15 at 06:59:32ID: 24148004

Well I can't find this part anywhere, so I guess I'll close the question.  Thank you for all of your suggestions.
