The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. video card - monitor works great on DVI but is unstable and unusable  on VGA

Hello - purchased an EVGA Nvidia 8600GT.  Decided to upgrade from the onboard video.
I first attached it via the VGA cable, since that is what I had been using with the onboard.

Everything looked OK when I restarted the system.  However, after about 5 minutes,
the picture started to degrade (I was still at the desktop).  First noticeable were the text
under the icons.  The text was actually jiggling slighty, I had to get closer to the LCD to make sure
my eyes weren't deceiving me.  After a few minutes, it got slightly worse, the icons themselves,
as well as the edges of open windows were quite obviously shaking.
At this point I turned off the system; I was concerned about damaging the components.

The resolution and refresh rate were exactly as they should be.  (1650*1080 @ 60Hz).

I hooked up the DVI connection for the first time, and what do you know, everything is
normal, no sign of any problems.

Does anybody have any idea why this is behaving so?

PS I changed the power supply to a new, higher rated, model and the VGA problem
persisted.  In any event, would a power-related problem affect the VGA and DVI outputs equally ? What else could be a factor ?
