Asus Eee 1000HD netbook won't turn on

My Asus Eee 1000HD netbook won't turn on, as in no sound at all and no LED lights.  The light on the charger turns on so it's not a power cable problem, and I tried the trick with unplugging, removing the battery, holding the power button on for a minute, then reconnecting.  I also tried this with the reset button, and I tried removing and reseating the RAM.  I looked at what I could see of the motherboard after opening the case and there was no visible burnout damage, but I know that doesn't mean much.

The very computer-illiterate person I bought it from (for extremely cheap, because it wasn't working) said that it shut down while he was trying to install Windows 7.  The first time he restarted, the LEDs came on for a while, but after that, it wouldn't restart at all.  I thought it would be a quick fix, but I'm now afraid that damaged the motherboard.  Obviously, that's way costly, so I want to exhaust all other options first.

He gave me the box, so I have all the serial numbers that aren't on the computer itself, whatever that's worth.  It's definitely out of warranty, though, and I tried calling Asus tech support who also said that it was a motherboard problem, but I've heard that from other companies when it hasn't been the case.

What if you take the battery out and power it up with just the AC adapter?

Grading was hard because the solution isn't a solution as much as an explanation of what probably happened and why my situation is hopeless, but reading a well-written description of what most likely happened and especially how it affects laptops/netbooks like my own gives me the peace of mind of knowing that there's really no way to fix it without paying more than it's worth.  As sad as that is, at least I know.
