Will an AGP Video Card work in a PCI Express Slot?

Hi Everyone;

      Recently, a friend of mine sold a motherboard to me so I can replace a damaged one from a storm.  I noticed this newer motherboard has a PCI Express slot on it which if I am not mistaken is specifically just for video much like an AGP slot.  At any rate, the video card taken from the damaged motherboard is an AGP Video card which brings me to the crux of this question.  Will the AGP video card be compatiable with the PCI Express Slot?

        Any shared input to this question will be appreciated.

        Thank you.

AGP is so old that I reckon any cheap PCI-E card you buy for a few dollars will outperform your existing AGP card. Just be sure to recycle the old card responsibly. Exotic materials used in such components don't belong on landfill.

Hi Everyone;

         Hopefully, this is not getting too off track of the original question, but, I do have something I am not clear on.  I wonder what makes PCI-E Video Cards outperform AGP Video Cards.

Hi

         Thanks so much for such a quick response Gary.  I noticed the motherboard does have onboard video.  Do you recommend I still look into purchasing a PCI-E Video Card?  And, if so, could you provide a direct online purchase link for one which will give performance greater than an AGP Video Card?

Hi There;

           Everything you have mentioned certainly makes sense, Gary.  Incidentally, and I hope these followup questions are not getting too off track of this original post, but, can other "non-video" cards be used in a PCI-E or PCI Express Slot?  Or, is this bus specifically designed for a PCI-E Video Card?

           And, secondly, with regards to the onboard video, I will not be doing any kind of gaming on this pc.  However, I do enjoy watching movies on DVD on this pc from time to time.  With that in mind, will the onboard video be resourceful enough to handle such an application?  The other things done on this pc is data backups onto DVD R and internet related activities like web surfing, emails, and e-commerce or shopping online.

            Any followup thoughts to these questions will be appreciated.

            Thank you.

Hi Everyone;

        I must confess this thread has been an eye opening experience to say the least.  To be truthful, I did not know anything about the PCI-E slot up until now.  It is nice having my knowledge updated from time to time seeing that I have been at least 5 years behind the times.  And, since everyone gave a breakdown of PCI-E slots and PCI-E cards by explaining why they are faster and give better performance, I only felt it to be fair to award points accordingly for this shared insight.

       A co-workers and friend at the university recently upgraded his entire system by replacing his motherboard, processor, RAM, etc., she decided to sell the board taken out to me for $20.00.  I really got a great deal on this seeing that this good working motherboard came with 2GB of DDR RAM and an Athlon XP 2400+ Processor.   Of course, when my friend told me the motherboard had a PCI-E slot on it, I started right away to learn more about it by posting this question accordingly.

         Thanks once again everyone for clearing everything up for me.  As everyone can tell, this is my first exposure to the PCI-E slot and knowing what it is about in the grand scheme of things.  By the way, thanks Gary for explaining the past and present evolution of expansion slots on motherboards.  Your explanation of how the older ISA slots got replaced with the PCI slots which are getting replaced with the PCI-E slots.  Without a doubt, within the field of computer technology, nothing ever stays the same.

           Thanks again for the great help on this one.
