DVD-ROM doesn't play disks

I have a LITEON DVD_ROM LTD 163 in a Dell Dimension 4550. When i insert a disk into the drive it appears to be reading it but when I double click the drive icon in My Computer I get a message telling me to insert a disk. when I first open My Computer with no disk in the drive the icon shows DVD-ROM. If I insert a CD I can watch the icon change to a CD-ROM so  know it is seeing a CD rather than a DVD. Unfortunately, I cannot play wither in this drive. I have tried updating the drive but there is evidently no update available. I am using driver version 5.1.2535.0. I have also removed and reinstalled the device with the same problem.

Please advise.
